With Perot, he assisted various customers, including Stanford University, in moving data centers and setting up recovery for those systems. Additionally, he helped set up the ACH backup systems for Bank of America. An expert in his field, Mr. Smith earned an associate degree in electrical and electronics engineering from the Ohio Institute of Technology in 1978. Subsequently, he expanded his professional knowledge, earning a mass disaster and fatality response certification through the Texas Division of Emergency Management and a business continuity and crisis management certification from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Outside of his work, Mr. Smith has served on the board of directors for the City of Rowlett's Community Emergency Response Teams and the board of advisors for Texas Baptist Men's Southern Baptist Disaster Relief. Devoted to those less fortunate, he also participated in relief trips to Haiti and Sri Lanka. On his trip to Haiti, he helped feed children from several orphanages with the aid of U.S. disaster relief organizations and Samaritan's Purse. Through the Texas Baptist Men's Disaster Relief team, Mr. Smith also tended to the emotional and spiritual needs of the people in the village of Kalmunai, Sri Lanka.
In light of his professional achievements, Mr. Smith received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Dallas Police Department and the Brazilian Medal of Freedom Award from the Vice President of Brazil. Similarly, he served as the keynote speaker at the Disaster Recovery Journal, a bi-yearly conference for professionals in business continuity disaster recovery.
