Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

With a distinguished career spanning five decades, Dr. Khaleghi is renowned for his expertise in structural engineering, cost engineering, and facility engineering. Before retiring after 33 years of dedicated service to the federal government, Dr. Khaleghi served as a civil engineer in a range of U.S. locales. His responsibilities were multifaceted, including assigning tasks to outside engineering firms and ensuring their compliance with project requirements, as well as determining project costs and pricing.

Dr. Khaleghi's tenure with the federal government saw him stationed across various states. He had a role as a cost engineer with the Corps of Engineers in San Francisco; prior to that, he served as a facility engineer with the U.S. Navy in New Orleans. A significant portion of Dr. Khaleghi's career was spent in New Orleans with the Corps of Engineers, where he specialized in cost engineering for a decade. During this time, he was instrumental in fortifying the city's walls and levees, particularly following Hurricane Katrina, to safeguard against future storms. His commitment to public safety and fiscal responsibility has left an indelible mark on the communities he served.

Born in Iran, Dr. Khaleghi's passion for engineering was ignited by his father's stories about German engineering feats in transportation infrastructure, such as the construction of tunnels, bridges and roads. This led Dr. Khaleghi to pursue an education that would underpin his career achievements. He earned an engineering degree from the University of Tehran College of Engineering in 1975 and went on to obtain his doctorate in civil engineering from the University of Oklahoma in 1982. He has taught courses in 10 different Colleges in several states.

Outside of his professional life, Dr. Khaleghi is recognized for his intellectual prowess as a Class A Chess Player, having been engaged in the game for 65 years and winning several tournaments. This strategic thinking no doubt complemented his analytical skills as an engineer. He has been a regular blood donor for over 30 years.
