Among other responsibilities, Dr. Courchaine oversees all federally funded grants in K-12 education, provides assistance in grant proposal writing, and meets with teams to discuss budgets, evaluation plans, and project deliverables. As an expert in advocating for Universal Design for Learning, she has been instrumental in her role, with expertise spanning accessibility, special education, English language learners, and other underserved students, as well as creating inclusive learning environments.
Before joining CAST Inc., Dr. Courchaine was an Educational Program Specialist at the U.S. Department of Education from 2015 to 2021, where she served as a Project Officer and played a pivotal role in expanding the definition of print-accessible materials to include digital instructional materials, a significant advancement for students requiring accessible educational resources and materials. From 2007-2011, Dr. Courchaine was an adjunct professor and distance program coordinator at The George Washington University.
Building upon a solid academic foundation, Dr. Courchaine received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Saint Mary's College of Maryland in 1999 and a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction in 2002. She also earned a Doctorate in Special Education from The George Washington University in 2012.
Dr. Courchaine's professional affiliations reflect her commitment to her field. She is a member of several industry-related organizations, including the Council of Exceptional Children, the American Educational Research Association, Standards and Accessibility Reporting, the Consortium for School Networking, and the Assistive Technology Industry Association. Dr. Courchaine's involvement in these organizations underscores her dedication to staying abreast of current trends and contributing to the discourse on educational accessibility.
