In this capacity, he manages the activities of a global network of risk and insurance professionals who are specifically dedicated to working with sports federations, organizing committees of sporting events, professional teams and leagues, and sports' governing organizations. Under Mr. Harper's leadership, his team offers insurance program design and brokerage services to provide services like risk identification and assessment, contingency planning, venue safety audits, claims management services, and operational readiness. A leader in his field, his expertise saw him recognized by Risk Insurance Magazine as a Power Broker in Sports Entertainment in 2009.
Prior to joining the Marsh USA Inc. team in 2000, Mr. Harper served as the risk manager at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, an opportunity he considers to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Earlier in his career, he worked for two sports insurance underwriting companies, Tokio Marine HCC in Boston and American Specialty Insurance & Risk Services, Inc. in Indiana.
Growing up, Mr. Harper's parents, Blanton Harper, Sr., and Emma Ethel Harper, instilled in him the value of education as a means to a better life. They believed that education was the key to building a successful path forward. As a result, he matriculated at Brown University, where he joined the Third World Coalition, an experience that opened his eyes to different perspectives. Mr. Harper graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Urban Studies and briefly considered pursuing a career in politics before becoming an insurance underwriter.
A volunteer in both professional and civic realms, Mr. Harper sits on the advisory board of the Sports and Entertainment Risk Management Alliance (SERMA®) and on the boards of the Atlanta Youth Academy and the Georgia Pet Coalition. He is also active with the Corporate Leadership Council at Fernbank Museum.
Outside of his professional endeavors, Mr. Harper is married to Shantilata Stone-Harper. Together, they enjoy traveling; wherever they go, Mr. Harper can count on meeting someone through his network from the Olympic Games. A family man, he loves spending time with his two sons and four grandchildren. In his free time, he enjoys playing jazz piano, playing chess, and playing tennis, and he is in the process of writing a book about his life titled "The Journey."
