Prior to focusing on the educational aspect of nursing, Dr. Hedgpeth solidified practical experience working as a registered nurse at Southeastern Regional Medical Center and Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, a tenure that provided her with invaluable insights into the aspects of patient care that she now imparts to her students. Specifically, her expertise in cardiac care is particularly notable, reflecting a high level of specialization and knowledge that has undoubtedly contributed to her success as both an educator and a health care provider. Since joining Robeson Community College, Dr. Hedgpeth has achieved significant milestones, including developing a practical nursing program through which nearly 20 graduate students navigate on their journey toward their degree on an annual basis.
For her contributions to nursing education, Dr. Hedgpeth was named Educator of the Year by the North Carolina Council for Practical Nurse Educators in 2015. As a result of her involvement in nursing and nursing education, she maintains several professional affiliations. Since 2012, she has served on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Council for Practical Nurse Educators and remains actively involved with the National League of Nursing, the American Nurses Association, the North Carolina Nurses Association, and the North Carolina Council for Practical Nurse Educators. Overall, her involvement with these associations accentuates her commitment to advancing the field of nursing education and staying abreast of developments.
Alongside her professional involvement, Dr. Hedgpeth's dedication to health care education is evident in her own education journey. She holds a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science in Nursing as well as a Master in Health Administration from the University of Phoenix. Most recently, in 2023, she graduated with a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from Aspen University and made a difference in the safety and health care outcomes of patients within the health care setting through her dissertation-an accomplishment she cites as a highlight of her career thus far. All in all, her educational pursuits have been instrumental in helping her achieve her career goals, which were inspired by her early experiences as a caregiver for family members-a role that led her to enter nursing school.
In all she has pursued and achieved, Dr. Hedgpeth attributes her success to great mentorship and leadership. Outside of her professional sphere, Dr. Hedgpeth participates in Relay for Life, an involvement that demonstrates her commitment to community service and cancer awareness. Looking ahead, Dr. Hedgpeth is focused on furthering her credentials and is set to obtain her certified nurse educator certification within the next year: such a goal reflects her ongoing dedication to both personal and professional growth within her field.
