Through the CSO, she combats cancer at a molecular level and employs Cryo-EM and Liquid-EM imaging technologies to study macromolecules in the context of human health and disease. In this capacity, Dr. Kelly also supervises graduate and post-doctoral students, writes grants and publications, and leads the next generation of scientists.
During the early stages of her career, Dr. Kelly gained valuable expertise in education with Virginia Tech's Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute. Likewise, he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School. She also honed her research expertise with Florida State University's Institute of Molecular Biophysics, Eastern Virginia Medical School, and Old Dominion University. Before starting her professional journey, she earned a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from Old Dominion University. Subsequently, Dr. Kelly received a Master of Science in chemistry from her alma mater and a PhD in molecular biophysics from Florida State University.
Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, Dr. Kelly aligns herself with the Microscopy Society of America and the Sigma Xi Research Honor Society. She contributes to a local breast cancer organization in conjunction with her work. Due to her vast breadth of knowledge, she has obtained several patents for drugs related to breast cancer and SARS-CoV-2 and authored multiple peer-reviewed publications in leading, high-impact journals in her field. Over the years, Dr. Kelly has also worked on projects involving liquid-electron microscopy and developing high-resolution imaging tools and approaches to fight the molecular aspects of human cancer and other diseases.
