Mr. Kykta has cultivated a distinguished career in engineering and physics, particularly within the realm of electro-optics. He is president of his own company, MAK Electro-Optics, with a focus on innovation and technological advancement. From 2021 to 2023, his expertise was recognized at Microsoft, where he served as a principal optical engineer working on the Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) being developed by Microsoft for the US Army.
Mr. Kykta has demonstrated his diverse skill set working for various companies. At Safran Electronics & Defense ( 201 to 2020), as an optical engineer he developed a fundamental understanding of the incandescent light bulb used in control panel assemblies for aircraft, and contributed significantly to Unipixel Displays Inc. (2006 to 2017) as a senior research scientist and author of many patents. He held the role of senior staff engineer at Microvision (2000 to 2006) where he was the principal investigator for a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant sponsored by the US Army to develop a photoluminescent display. At Microvision, he also worked on expanding display technology from sRGB to High Dynamic range (HDR). He worked as a senior engineer at 3M to develop a successful commercial electronic projector. Earlier in his career, at the startup, SIDT, he developed a fundamental model to predict phosphor cathodluminescence performance.
Additionally, Mr. Kykta has been an active member of the Society for Information Display (SID) since 1997, showcasing his commitment to the professional engineering community. Moreover, he has remained involved with the Optical Society (Optica) and SPIE. His work on understandering HDR and the connection to human vision models is still relevant. Overall, his contributions to lighting technology and display have been significant, with his work on understanding the physics of the electric incandescent bulb stand out as a notable achievement where their durability and resilience to temperature changes are essential.
Along with his professional experience, the foundation of Mr. Kykta's expertise is rooted in his academic background. He earned a doctorate in atomic and molecular physics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1996 and holds both a master's degree in physics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and a Bachelor of Applied Science in physics from Haverford College.
