Moreover, he has been instrumental as the current Chair of the US Technical Advisory Group TC 279 for Innovation Management, ISO 56000 Series internationally since 2018. He notably served as the vice chair from 2013 to 2018 before being named to his new position.
Mr. Fernandez's corporate experience includes serving as the strategic sourcing director for hotel operations at InterContinental Hotels Group in the Greater Atlanta area from 2011 to 2013 and as the director of procurement systems and processes for the organization between 2008 and 2013. Earlier in his career, he managed procurement and materials management systems at Florida Power & Light from 1987 to 1991.
Mr. Fernandez's journey into his profession began with an academic appointment at the University of Miami, where he taught classes while earning his master's degree. He also taught courses as an adjunct professor at Florida International University, Nova Southeastern University, Universidad del Pacífico, and the Universidad Francisco Marroquin.
Mr. Fernandez's academic background has significantly contributed to his professional success. He earned a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering, Magna Cum Laude, and a master's degree in management sciences and quantitative methods, also Magna Cum Laude, from the University of Miami in 1974 and 1977, respectively. He is also a certified purchasing manager through the Institute of Supply Management and a registered professional engineer in Florida.
Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Fernandez co-founded the Innovation Management System Professionals organization. He is also a prominent member of the American Society for Quality. Additionally, he has served as a senior examiner for Florida's Sterling Award for Performance Excellence and as an examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality and Performance Excellence Award.
As an expert in his field, Mr. Fernandez has contributed several articles to various professional journals but most important was his recent co-authorship of the book, 'The Framework for Innovation: A Guide to the Body of Innovation Knowledge,' as well as a contributing author for the book, 'Total Innovative Management Excellence (TIME).' Earlier in his career, he authored the book, 'Total Quality in Purchasing and Supplier Management.' He has also been recognized for his accomplishments during his tenure with Florida Power & Light, where his work coincided with the company's achievement of the Deming Prize, marking a significant milestone early in his career.
