A seasoned tax professional and financial executive, Mr. Phillips excels as a partner within the global accounting firm, EY LLP ("EY"). At EY, he serves as the tax and strategy leader of EY's global captive network, as America's insurance tax markets leader, and as a trusted advisor to various clients. In this capacity, he collaborates with established insurance companies, helps create new insurance companies (i.e. captives) for non-financial services organizations, and oversees the go-to-market efforts of EY's insurance tax professionals. Alongside his work with EY, Mr. Phillips is a board member and the adult league commissioner for the Grapevine Southlake Soccer Association, a member of the Board of Trustees of his fraternity's foundation, Sigma Tau Gamma, a board member of Community Connections serving the special needs children of North Central Texas and a Board member of his HOA.
Over the years, Mr. Phillips worked for EY LLP as chief operational officer, markets leader, and tax markets leader. During the early stages of his career, he gained valuable expertise in board positions with the Columbus Speech & Hearing Center and the American Red Cross of Greater Columbus. Before rejoining EY in 2011, Mr. Phillips served as a business unit tax managing partner with KPMG LLP; prior to his KPMG experience, he worked in management and staff roles with EY and Hanlon, Morgan & Stirton. An expert in his field, he earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting from Southeastern Louisiana University in 1992. Subsequently, Mr. Phillips became a certified public accountant, received a Master of Science in tax from DePaul University's Driehaus College of Business in 1999, completed the Global Insurance Institute at Wharton program in 2006, and earned an MBA from Ohio State University's Fisher College of Business in 2010.
As noted, Mr. Phillips is driven to remain abreast of changes in the field. Considering his outstanding work, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame for services to the captive insurance industry by the Captive Review, where he has also been named to the Power 50, annually highlighting the 50 most influential professionals in the insurance industry every year since 2017. While his career has been filled with highlights, he takes the most pride in executing a servant leadership philosophy in seeking ways to highlight the skills of others and putting people in positions for their best opportunities. This has created an intense focus on promoting individuals through the ranks within the business world. Mr. Phillips is also a strong advocate for diversity and challenges everyone to understand and embrace the unique skills and life experiences each individual brings into a discussion; accordingly, this has often led to a fight against standardized metrics and a demand that every performance manager know the uniqueness of their reports to provide support and work opportunities for others. Though hard work and dedication have brought him far in his career, he credits his success to his rural beginnings in southern Louisiana, his desire to build a better future for his children, and the discipline and motivation instilled in him by his participation in taekwondo and fraternity as a young adult. Within the coming years, Mr. Phillips intends to explore new avenues in life and positively impact others.
