Since 2021, he has served as a machine learning mentor at Caloudi, a position in which he imparts his extensive knowledge to budding professionals in the industry. Concurrently, he has worked as an angel investor and a mentor at Vysioneer since 2019, where he applies his expertise to advance the company's artificial intelligence (AI) technological capabilities.
Prior to occupying his current role, Dr. Hou joined Caloudi as a chief data scientist, leading initiatives that significantly contributed to the company's growth and innovation. From 2000 to 2015, he served as the vice president of business development at Fiber Optical Communication Inc. (FOCI). Furthermore, he was a key contributor to the advancement of fiber optics to tunnel every protocol under the sun over a common optical link. He co-developed a patent for a guiding connector for optical fiber extension as co-packaged optics in 2011 that enables the integration of optical components directly into integrated circuits (IC) chips and published a paper in the peer-reviewed journal Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research in 2014. For Generative AI applications this innovative technology addresses the problem of overloading the number of optical modules after ultra-high computing power.
During his first several years at FOCI, Dr. Hou simultaneously held the same title at MRV Communications and played a pivotal role in developing new business opportunities for the organization. For the first 15 years of his career, he gained experience and made significant contributions in the Advanced Technology Center at Honeywell, formerly AlliedSignal, where he progressed from a member of the research staff to senior director. While at Honeywell, Dr. Hou published a study that shared a two-dimensional theory for vibrations of piezoelectric crystal plates in 1987 and established his first patent in 1992.
For several of his many contributions at Honeywell, Dr. Hou earned the Technology Achievement Chairman Award two years running, in 1994 and 1995. Leading up to his first professional position, he was born and raised in Taiwan, where he completed his undergraduate studies. Thereafter, he immigrated to the United States in 1979 to attend Princeton University on a doctorate scholarship. Dr. Hou's academic background not only facilitated his entry into Honeywell but also equipped him with the skills necessary to navigate and excel during the nascent stages of the internet era when he joined FOCI later on in his career.
Within his field of focus, Dr. Hou is recognized for his exceptional ability to foster technical development within startups and for his dedication to mentoring the next generation of professionals in his field. Alongside his current mentoring position at Caloudi, he serves as a volunteer mentor for the National Science Foundation. Additionally, Dr. Hou holds membership with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and maintains affiliation with the Chinese Institute of Engineers USA (CIE-USA), where he previously served as president following his election in 1992.
