With a tenure spanning over three decades, he has dedicated over 30 years to his role within the department. Mr. Johnson spent his first 17 years of service on the Southwest Border in El Paso, Texas and Southern New Mexico working several high-profile counter narcotics investigations as a Special Agent and Supervisor. His leadership and executive skills have been instrumental in directing units focused on public safety and criminal investigations related to narcotics and violent crime.
In his most recent role since 2020 as the Assistant Special Agent in Charge, Mr. Johnson has overseen significant operations within the north Texas area and Oklahoma. Before this position, he began serving as the acting Chief Intelligence Officer and Acting Deputy Special Agent in Charge of the intelligence program in 2019, where he played a pivotal role in strategic and tactical intelligence operations. Between 2018 and 2019, Mr. Johnson was the group supervisor for the Worksite Enforcement Group of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, focusing on regulatory compliance related to hiring practices. From 2016 to 2018, he was a program manager and Acting Unit Chief for HSI (Homeland Security Investigations) Domestic Operations in Washington, D.C. His leadership journey within HSI began as a group supervisor between 2002 and 2016 after transitioning from his role as a special agent with the Legacy United States Customs Service from 1993 to 2002. Since 2020, Mr. Johnson has also been the Congressional Liaison, serving as the principal HSI advocate to Members of Congress and their staff within the congressional district.
In preparation for his career, Mr. Johnson earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and government from the University of North Texas in 1992. He joined Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.'s Eta Epsilon chapter during his college years.
Outside of his professional life, Mr. Johnson is deeply involved in his community through outreach with the University of North Texas Alumni and frequently contributes to local parishes and soccer teams. Mr. Johnson's personal achievements include being the supervisor of a team that earned the Team of the Year Award in 2017 for their work on criminal and regulatory compliance and receiving the Exceptional Leadership Award in 2022 for his outstanding work in reorganizing the public safety division and serving as the Acting Deputy Special Agent in Charge.
As Mr. Johnson approaches retirement age within the next two years, he envisions continuing his service to the public sector or potentially entering private industries that align with his expertise in security risk management. He aims to leverage his extensive experience to benefit local government or private industry initiatives focused on public service and law enforcement.
