His career journey includes numerous impactful roles, including senior speech AI engineer at Ellipsis Health from 2017 to 2018, engineering manager at SMI between 2012 and 2017, and research manager at Toyota InfoTechnology Center USA from 2002 to 2011. Among various other noteworthy positions, Mr. Reaves garnered success as a software and research engineer at such companies as Nuance Communications and Matsushita Electrical Industrial Company Ltd. He was also influential at Advanced Telecommunications Research Lab in Kyoto, Japan, where he played a pivotal role in developing a speech-to-speech translation system that involved language modeling, speech recognition and synthesis.
Apart from his full-time career endeavors, Mr. Reaves is the owner and consultant of the Ben Reaves Software System (BRSS). He previously garnered experience as a consultant for Oracle Corp, and Fluential Inc.
Mr. Reaves's journey into electrical engineering was shaped by his early fascination with electronics and encouragement by his father, an astronomy professor, during high school. Following graduation, he achieved a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering, magna cum laude, from the University of Southern California Los Angeles in 1981 and a Master of Science in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1983, and a business license in Menlo Park for BRSS.
Mr. Reaves's success and expertise are evident through multiple U.S. patents under his name, including those for detecting speech and noise and identifying speaker changes in movie translations. In 2023, he secured a National Science Foundation Small Business Innovation Research Grant alongside the chief executive officer at Metabob and a professor at Menlo College. Mr. Reaves also lent his expertise through publication in various peer-reviewed journals and as an editor for a publication authored by an Emeritus Professor from UC Santa Cruz, "Calendrical Observations in the Mojave Desert."
As a dedicated professional, Mr. Reaves is a member of several leading industry-related organizations, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Outside of his professional endeavors, he is deeply committed to contributing to his community and broader fields of interest. He has served on the Automotive User Interface Conference program committee since 2011 and volunteered as a judge for high school students the Synopsys Science and Technology Championship.
