With nearly six decades of experience to her credit as a distinguished architect, Ms. Armstrong serves as principal at Leslie Armstrong Architect, through which she has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to her craft. Well-regarded as a pioneer in her field, having begun her journey at a time when very few women were accepted as architects, her focus has resided in renovating and re-purposing buildings for the performing arts, along with the renovation and design of residential and commercial properties. Upon completion of her apprenticeship, Ms. Armstrong began her journey in 1973 in partnership with Russell and Kirsten Childs in Armstrong Childs Associates. In 1980 she joined Alan Buchsbaum at Design Coalition, and four years later formed Armstrong Cumming Architects with Roger Cumming. In 1994 she went to work for HLW International and thereafter for the Rockwell Group. In 2009, she resumed practicing on her own as Leslie Armstrong Architect.
Ms. Armstrong is also an accomplished author. Her best-known work, The Little House, published by Collier / Macmillan in 1979, serves as a step-by-step handbook for the design and construction of small, single-family housing. She also went on to co-author Space for Dance: An Architectural Design Guide commissioned in 1980 by the National Endowment for the Arts. More recently, Ms. Armstrong crafted a memoir, Girl Intrepid: A New York Story of Privilege and Perseverance. Published in 2020, the book serves as a coming-of-age chronicle of her early experiences as a young architect during the 1960s and 1970s.
Ms. Armstrong is affiliated with several industry-related organizations including the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), Phi Beta Kappa, and the American Institute of Architects since 1972. She is Green Associate accredited by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), and a member of the Passive House Institute, the Alumnae Board of the Brearley School, a trustee emerita of Robert College of Istanbul, and is an advisor to The Helicon Foundation for music.
Her early education was completed at The Brearley School, where she was awarded the Julia Whiton Essay Prize and Bessie Kunz Art Prize. After graduating from Brown University with a Bachelor of Arts in architectural history, magna cum laude, she earned a Master of Architecture from the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation in 1966.
Ms. Armstrong attributes her success to her love of design and to her stubbornness and perseverance—qualities that shine through in her memoir. Looking toward the future, she has set forth ambitious goals, including a sustainable update of The Little House, writing another episodic memoir distinct from her first narrative work, and seeing that her children find stability and happiness in their lives.
