After developing and implementing a photography, and an equestrian program for Camp Boggy Creek from 1996 to 1999, Ms. Mabou's career at Youth Homes began in 1999, when she took on the role of a residential counselor. She then progressed to serve as a therapeutic behavioral services coordinator at Family Stress Center from 2000 to 2001 before returning to Camp Boggy Creek from 2001 to 2003 and Youth Homes in 2003, where she served as a behavioral coach from 2003 to 2005. Ms. Mabou's journey at Youth Homes thereafter continued when she took on the role of foster care program coordinator from 2005 to 2008. It was during this time that Ms. Mabou began developing enrichment activities for Youth Homes' residential foster youth.
Between 2010 and 2013, Ms. Mabou became the residential supervisor and Pro-ACT trainer while concurrently contributing to the creation of Youth Homes' Orchard and Garden vocational program for foster youth. An additional example of Ms. Mabou's commitment to investing in the future of our youth was as a college scholarship program committee member for the North American Nature Photography Association from 2003 to 2012. Overall, her work with Youth Homes in various capacities is distinguished by her development of enrichment services, which helps youth, young adults, and their families experiencing trauma gain access to activities that they would not typically experience, therefore aiding in their growth and recovery. Specifically, the services leverage play as a vital component in the healing process for children with complex trauma.
Overall, Ms. Mabou's career path was shaped by her initial work as a horse trainer, her degree in photography, and her experiences at Paul Newman's SeriousFun camps for children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses, where she learned the healing power of play. She found her calling with Youth Homes, the longest-operating group home and residential service home in Northern California. Her own hobbies and education have strongly shaped her professional pursuits and career. She holds an Associate of Science in professional photographic technologies with concentrations in photography, film, juvenile justice, and psychology, which she earned from the Southeast Center for Photographic Studies in 1997. The same year she graduated, Ms. Mabou earned the award for photo student of the year and was nominated by her professors, and subsequently received an Outstanding Young Women of America award.
In all she has pursued, Ms. Mabou attributes her success to her passion for her work and the joy derived from supporting foster youth and employees alike. Outside of her professional work, she enjoys engaging in her longtime hobbies of photography, horseback riding, reading, and gardening, and she actively supports her granddaughter in competitive cheerleading. Looking ahead, Ms. Mabou envisions retiring from Youth Homes but plans to continue advocating for national foster care improvements through publishing, speaking engagements, and consulting work.
