Dr. Farghaly's career is marked by a series of prestigious roles that have established him as a leading authority in computational linguistics. He taught graduate and undergraduate courses at Kuwait University, the American University in Cairo, University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Cairo University, and Stanford University. Recently, he lent his expertise as an NLP consultant to Appen from 2016 to 2022, maintained a tenure at Lionbridge from 2017 to 2021 as a computational linguistics consultant, and was employed by Baaz Inc., where he served as a computational linguistic consultant from 2015 to 2016 and senior computational linguistic consultant between 2016 and 2021. Dr. Farghaly's academic influence extended through his role as a visiting professor of Arabic computational linguistics at Cairo University from 2008 to 2021. Among a multitude of other roles throughout his 40-year career, his earlier years were shaped by appointments in academia teaching linguistics at Kuwait University and similar courses at The American University in Cairo and the Defense Language Institute and working as a senior linguist at YY Software Corporation, YY Technologies, and YY Software Inc.
Highly educated in his respective field, Dr. Farghaly earned a Bachelor of Arts in English language and literature from the University of Alexandria in 1966, a Master of Arts in linguistics and English language teaching at the University of Leeds in 1975, and a Doctor of Philosophy in linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1981.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr. Farghaly is a professional member of the Association for Computational Linguistics. He also lent his expertise to the advisory board for Alpha Publishing from 2022 to 2023. Furthermore, Dr. Farghaly has attended many professional conferences and has been a keynote speaker at several conferences in the Middle East and In the United States. He published five books and more than 30 Academic papers in his field.
Among many career accomplishments, Dr. Farghaly has become celebrated for his pioneering efforts in introducing AI concepts to the Middle East during the early stages of development. Consequently, he has been credited with translating a seminal book on AI during the 1980s, which marked a significant milestone in disseminating knowledge within the region. In light of his professional success, Dr. Farghaly received a Certificate of Appreciation from Cairo University.
