Leveraging more than three decades of excellence in organizational development and Chinese economic reforms, Dr. Guthrie has serves as Professor of Global Leadership and China and Executive Director of China Initiatives for the Thunderbird School of Global Management. Since 2020, he has focused his efforts on teaching courses on global management and China's economic transformation while overseeing the China initiatives for the institution. Additionally, he has served as a member of the 100 Coaches Agency since 2020 and is the Co-Founder and Chairman for On Global Leadership, which aims to provide corporate advisory services, strategic advice and practical assistance in China market entry, regulatory and business marketing and corporate strategy and leadership.
Doug has spent his career researching, writing, teaching, and advising companies about two topics: organizational strategy and development, where he has focused on issues of leadership, organizational culture, corporate social responsibility, and corporate strategy in China; and the Chinese economic reforms, where he has focused on the intersection of economic and political forces that lead to successful economic development models. From 2014-19, Guthrie was a Senior Director at Apple, based in Shanghai China, where he led Apple University efforts on leadership and organizational development in China. Prior to joining Apple, from 2010-14, Guthrie was Dean of the George Washington University School of Business, Vice President for University China Operations, and Professor of International Business. Prior to his time at GW, from 1997-2010, Guthrie held faculty positions at NYU's Stern School of Business, where he was Professor of Management and Director of Custom Executive Education, and NYU's Faculty of Arts and Sciences, where he was Professor of Sociology and the Founding Director of the University's Office of Global Education. He has held visiting Professorships at several business schools, including Kellogg, Harvard, INSEAD, Stanford, Columbia, and Emory. He served as Director of the Business Institutions Initiative at the Social Science Research Council (1999-2003) and was Academic Director of the Berlin School of Creative Leadership (2008-11). His research has been recognized by numerous grants and awards.
Throughout his career, Dr. Guthrie has contributed a great deal of research to his field, including the books "Dragon in a Three-Piece Suit: The Emergence of Capitalism in China," in 1999 "Social Connections in China: Institutions, Culture, and the Changing Nature of Guanxi" in 2001, and "China and Globalization: The Social, Economic, and Political Transformation of Chinese Society," originally published in 2008, with revised editions published in 2010 and 2013. He also received the Association of Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Associations Virginia S. Hodgkinson Research Book Prize in 2012 "Politics and Partnerships: The Transformation of the Nonprofit Sector in the Era of the Declining Welfare State."
Among his professional accomplishments, Dr. Guthrie was an invited fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences in 2002 and was inducted to the Sociological Research Association of the ASA in 2003. He was honored with an Executive MBA Award for Excellence in Teaching from the New York University Stern School of Business in 2007 and was recognized as a Daniel P. Paduano Fellow for the Paduano Program on Business Ethics the same year. In 2010, he was inducted to the Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society and won Best Paper of the Social Issues in Management Section from the Academy of Management in 2007.
To prepare for his career, Dr. Guthrie earned a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese literature in 1991 and a bachelor's degree in East Asian languages in 1992, both from the University of Chicago. Following these achievements, he attained a Doctor of Philosophy in Economic Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1997. During his academic pursuits, he was honored with a President's Award from the University of Chicago, received a graduate fellowship from the University of California, Berkeley's East Asian studies department and a Younger Scholar's Award from the National Endowment for the Humanities. He also received an International Pre-Dissertation Fellowship from the Social Science Research Council and a China Dissertation Fellowship from the Committee on Scholarly Communication, among other fellowships. His doctoral dissertation was awarded the American Sociological Association's National Dissertation of the Year Award in 1997.
Within the coming years, Dr. Guthrie intends to continue to serve as a voice for what is happening in China, as he considers the present the most important time for relations between the United States and China.
