Looking toward the future, Dr. Sotzing intends to promote the use of naturally biodegradable polymers from natural resources for commodity applications such as exterior paints and electronics.

He has contracted work with several major companies, including Kraft Foods, Air Products and Chemicals Inc., Samsung, Philip Morris USA, New Balance, Victoria's Secret, Oakley, and, among others, Sekisui.
As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Sotzing lent his time and expertise as an editor for the Journal of Materials Science during 2008. He has been the editor of the Journal of Functional Biomaterials MDPI since 2022.
As a dedicated civil advocate, Dr. Sotzing has been involved with the University of Connecticut's chapter of the National Academy of Inventors and the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering. He has also donated to the March of Dimes and Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital. Additionally, Dr. Sotzing served his country in the U.S. Army shortly after graduating high school and was subsequently honorably discharged from the U.S. Army Reserves.
Dr. Sotzing received a Bachelor of Science from Mary Washington College in 1993 and a Doctor of Philosophy in conductive polymers from the University of Florida in 1997. Additionally, he completed postdoctoral studies at the California Institute of Technology in 1999. Dr. Sotzing remains active in his professional community as a member of the American Chemical Society, the Materials Research Society, and the Connecticut Academy of Math and Science.
As a testament to his dedication to the field, Dr. Sotzing received an American Institute of Chemists Award in 1993, the prestigious American Chemical Society POLYED Undergraduate Polymer Chemistry Award recognizing his outstanding undergraduate research in polymer chemistry in 1993, and a National Science Foundation Career Award in 2004.
