Dr. Obney has established himself as a distinguished cardiothoracic surgeon with over 20 years of experience in his field. Currently serving as a staff physician at Fairfield Medical Center since 2023, he is deeply involved in patient care, performing two to three surgeries four days a week, conducting rounds with his team, and seeing patients for post-operation consults. Located in Lancaster, Ohio, the nonprofit acute care facility has served patients for over 100 years and has over 220 beds to accommodate patients.
In addition to his commitments at Fairfield Medical Center, Dr. Obney began serving as a staff cardiothoracic surgeon at Mount Carmel Medical Group in Columbus, Ohio, in 2017. The medical group is best known for providing exceptional care and access to over 250 primary and specialty care providers throughout central Ohio. During an earlier stage of his career, Dr. Obney worked at the James Haley Veterans' Hospital in Tampa, Florida, for over five years, where he gained invaluable experience as the section chief of cardiac surgery. During his tenure in South Florida, he also maintained a teaching appointment at the University of South Florida. Dr. Obney then relocated to Texas to enter private practice. Upon his arrival, he garnered nearly a decade of success as the chief of cardiac surgery and then as the deputy chief of the surgery department.
Throughout his career, Dr. Obney has become an expert in coronary bypass surgery, heart valve surgery, lung cancer and robotic lung surgery. His expertise enabled him to initiate a program for robotic lung surgery at Mount Carmel and continue this innovative work at Fairfield Medical Center.
Dr. Obney's professional journey is underpinned by a solid educational foundation and continuous learning. He holds a bachelor's degree from Case Western Reserve University since 1989 and a Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Ohio in 1993, followed by a residency and fellowship at the Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, in 1998 and 2000, respectively. Dr. Obney's dedication to advancing his skills in robotic surgery led him to undergo an additional nine months of training beyond his initial education. He also achieved a Master of Jurisprudence in health care law, policy, and management from Texas A&M University School of Law in 2022. Dr. Obney is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
Outside his demanding career, Dr. Obney enjoys membership in the Florida Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons, and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. He is also active civically, giving back to various nonprofit organizations, including the American Heart Association. Most honorably, Dr. Obney served his country in the U.S. Army for over a decade, rising to lieutenant colonel and serving on the frontlines during Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he deployed with the 874th forward surgical team in Kirkuk, Iraq. He later worked with the 67th Combat Support Hospital in Mosul, Iraq.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Dr. Obney attributes much of his success to the strong work ethic instilled in him by his parents, who dedicated 40 years to careers in education. Their commitment and dedication significantly influenced him and contributed to his achievements.
