With nearly 30 years of dedicated service as a master police officer with the Stratford Police Department, from 1986 to 2013, he received recognition for his commitment to public safety and community engagement. His tenure in law enforcement was characterized by a steadfast dedication to upholding the law and fostering positive relations between the police force and the community, earning him distinction as the most decorated cop in the Stratford Police Department. He is the only non-Bridgeport police officer to receive a service award from the Bridgeport Police Department; while he was off duty he apprehended two suspects who had just shot someone. At the age of 21, Mr. Ramos overcame a severe stuttering problem and went on to be the lead SWAT negotiator and a radio personality. He frequently discusses this during his public talks or on the radio. He explained, "With 3 million stutterers in the U.S., I strive to use this fact as a guiding light for people to never give up on overcoming their disabilities. I stuttered so bad I could not answer the phone and say hello, and in grammar school, when every student had to read a paragraph, the nuns would skip me because of my stuttering problems."
For his contributions, Mr. Ramos received numerous accolades, including induction into the National Black Police Officers Hall of Fame in Chicago in 2023. Moreover, he earned the Martin Luther King Distinction Award from the State of Connecticut Martin Luther King Jr. Commission, the Man of the Year Award from Governor Richard Blumenthal in 2017, and received the prestigious Knight of Chevalier award from the Police Hall of Fame in Florida. Additionally, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the State Capital and Governor Blumenthal that same year.
In conjunction with his policing career, Mr. Ramos pursued his passion for radio broadcasting. For over 25 years, he has served as a radio personality out of the city of Bridgeport, CT, broadcasting on stations such as WICC in Bridgeport, Connecticut; ESPN radio; and WFAN. In 2021, when he transitioned from full-time to part-time radio show host, Mr. Ramos maintained his influence and continued to host shows that delved into sports commentary and social issues. Throughout his career, he has remained actively involved in advocating for the hiring of women and minorities; as a result of his efforts to speak out, the city ultimately began to hire more women and minorities, leading to significant changes throughout the city. Along with continuing his social advocacy, Mr. Ramos continued his own education and received a Master of Science in sociology from Southern Connecticut State University in 2022, an academic achievement that has undoubtedly enriched his understanding of societal dynamics and contributed to his community work and teaching.
Mr. Ramos' association with organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Give2theTroops.org, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and the Girl Scouts of America highlights his dedication to social causes, specifically those focused on uplifting women. Moreover, he has devoted his time to educating and mentoring youth, taking children on educational trips to Broadway plays and the Muhammad Ali Museum in Louisville, Kentucky. Since earning his advanced degree, Mr. Ramos has embarked on a new chapter as a college professor, a role in which he aims to leverage his experience in public service and his passion for community service.
