A pivotal moment in Mr. Mathison's career was co-founding Telenet Communications Corporation in 1972 alongside Philip M. Walker, under the umbrella of Bolt Beranek and Newman. This venture marked the establishment of the first commercial packet-switching communication network, laying the groundwork for what would become the internet. Telenet was acquired by GTE in 1980, and Mr. Mathison served as vice president of planning at Telenet, and at GTE Telenet from 1973 to 1990, demonstrating his leadership and vision in the burgeoning field of digital communications. His expertise was further recognized through subsequent executive roles at Sprint International and Global One, where he served as vice president of planning until the year 1998.
Mr. Mathison's academic background played a crucial role in his professional achievements. He earned a Bachelor of Science in engineering physics from Cornell University in 1965 and a Master of Science in management from the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1968. His passion for technology and public policy was ignited during his college years and further developed through his thesis work on computer communications at MIT. This foundation allowed him to contribute significantly to the field, including co-authoring seminal works such as "Computers and Telecommunications: Issues in Public Policy", published by Prentice Hall in 1970 and "The History of Telenet and the Commercialization of Packet Switching in the United States" for IEEE Communications Magazine in 2012.
