Prior to assuming his leadership role at United Way, Mr. Cleverly was an agency owner with Shelter Insurance Companies, where he honed his skills in strategic planning and community engagement. Previously, he served as an assistant women's basketball coach at the University of Detroit Mercy and as a video coordinator for women's basketball at Florida State University. He began his professional journey with Pacers Sports & Entertainment as an Indiana Fever basketball coordinator, following internships with the Indiana Pacers and Indiana Fever professional basketball teams.
Mr. Cleverly's expertise in strategic planning, community-building and fundraising has earned him recognition as a leader in his field. His commitment to making a lasting impact is evident in his approach to leadership and community service. One of Mr. Cleverly's most notable achievements is his ability to inspire others to see beyond their current circumstances; this positive outlook has been a cornerstone of his work with United Way of DeKalb County and beyond.
Mr. Cleverly's academic background includes a Master of Arts in physical education with an emphasis in sports administration from Ball State University, completed in 2007, and a Bachelor of Science in sports administration from the same institution, obtained in 2006. He is also a proud alumnus of DeKalb High School, class of 2000. Furthering his education, Mr. Cleverly has achieved certifications from the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, with courses on topics such as fundraising management, major gifts and capital campaigns, and he holds certifications as an insurance agent in two states.
Outside of his professional life, Mr. Cleverly is deeply involved in civic associations and has contributed to various creative projects. A member of Lions Clubs International, he currently serves as vice president of the Auburn Lions Club. He has served as an assistant boy's basketball coach at DeKalb High School since 2021 and has held multiple board positions with NeighborLink DeKalb County and St. Martin's Healthcare. Mr. Cleverly's community leadership has been recognized with several awards, including being named to the DeKalb LEADS Class of 2021 by the DeKalb Chamber Partnership and receiving the Helping Hand Award from United Way of DeKalb County Inc. in 2020.
As a father of four, Mr. Cleverly cherishes attending his children's sporting events and engaging in family sports-related activities. Looking ahead, he aims to establish a homeless shelter and open more childcare facilities in his community. In the meantime, he will continue to treat others with respect and kindness, creating a ripple effect that will inspire others to do the same.
