Mr. Carpenter is a distinguished artist and owner of Carpenter Hill Studios, where he has been honing his craft since 2002. His tenure at the studio marks a significant period in his career dedicated to the intersection of visual art and music. Mr. Carpenter has explored the unique fusion of these disciplines all the way back to 1985, when he created 18 woven panels inspired by Bach's "The Art of Fugue." His latest project, "Bolero de Cochereau," centers around an organ improvisation performed by Pierre Cochereau at Notre Dame in 1973. Mr. Carpenter's "Etude in Orange Hues – Spiral Frequences" was chosen to be part of the highly competitive "Made in NY" art exhibit in 2024.
In addition to running Carpenter Hill Studios, Mr. Carpenter has a rich history as an educator with over 30 years of teaching experience, mainly in the elementary division and gifted and talented programs. During that time, he kept up with his artwork and believed that he should be able to practice what he taught. He participated in national, juried, and regional shows, picking and choosing his way through his art career while teaching. After retiring, he decided to focus entirely on his artwork. His commitment to the arts extends beyond his own practice; he has served as a board member of the Society for New Music since 2008 and is also a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers, the Professional Artists Association, and the American Guild of Organists, Central NY Chapter. These roles underscore Mr. Carpenter's multifaceted contributions to the music and visual arts community and his dedication to fostering new talent.
Mr. Carpenter's academic background laid the foundation for his successful career. His educational journey began with coursework in music theory and composition at Westminster Choir College in 1965. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a focus on art studies and design from Syracuse University in 1969, followed by a Master of Fine Arts from the same institution in 1974. Mr. Carpenter holds a teacher certificate in art education from the New York State Board of Regents. He credits his success to effective networking and the guidance of effective mentors throughout his career.
Mr. Carpenter's life outside the studio is marked by a passion for riding motorcycles and a commitment to sharing his wealth of knowledge with others. With an eagerness to continue creating impactful artwork, he aims to communicate his ideas effectively and leverage his extensive experience to mentor aspiring artists and enthusiasts alike. He has embraced his belief that music and visual art work together seamlessly and bills himself as an "intersensory artist."
