Mr. Spencer has found success as a professional vocalist with the Sunset Band, showcasing his exceptional talent in singing and songwriting that spans such musical genres as gospel and R&B. His journey in the arts and public service has been marked by significant contributions and roles that have defined his career. Before embarking on his musical journey with Sunset Band, he dedicated over two decades to public service within the City of Annapolis. From 2000 to 2014, he held the position of director of community development, where he was instrumental in fostering growth and development within the community. Prior to this role, Mr. Spencer imparted his knowledge and expertise as a member of the faculty at the University of Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute in College Park.
Mr. Spencer's commitment to public service began with his tenure at the Annapolis Fire Department in 1974. Until 1997, he not only served the community through his role in emergency services but also made history by becoming the first Black paramedic in Anne Arundel County. Additionally, Mr. Spencer founded A.J. Spencer Consultants LLC, and Enrapture Records, further diversifying his professional endeavors into consulting and music production. His creative output includes the solo album "Person to Person," released in 1987.
Mr. Spencer's expertise in singing, songwriting, and visual arts has earned him recognition and accolades that highlight his multifaceted talents. Notably, he was featured in The Arts Council Virtual Art Gallery Series and served as a torchbearer in the 1996 International Olympic Games. His membership in esteemed organizations, such as The Toni Morrison Society and August Wilson Society, underscores his commitment to cultural and artistic excellence.
Studying administration and management during his time in academia, Mr. Spencer earned a Bachelor of Arts from Sojourner-Douglass College in 1997, followed by a Master of Public Administration in 2011. His educational pursuits were further complemented by licenses as a Certified African American Paramedic, Certified Arson Investigator, and Certified Public Information Officer.
Beyond his professional life, Mr. Spencer is deeply involved in civic associations that reflect his commitment to community engagement and preservation. He has contributed to various organizations, including the Chesapeake Conservancy and the Northern Arundel Cultural Preservation Society Inc., and served as a former school board member for Anne Arundel County Public Schools.
Outside of his vocation, Mr. Spencer's interests include shooting pool, visiting museums, and enjoying music. Looking toward the future, he aspires to expand his artistic influence by integrating his designs into fabric, clothing, drapes, carpets, and more.
