Starting as a snow leopard researcher and conservationist for the Altai Nature Reserve, Russia, in the 1990s, he served as a biodiversity conservation expert for UNDP/GEF Project and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) from 2006 to 2014, and then subsequently moved on to serve as an international consultant on UNDP and UNEP projects funded by GEF and focusing on biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation, and sustainable land management. Notably, as an international consultant since 2015, he has played a pivotal role in developing, managing, and evaluating 30 GEF projects in 27 developing countries.
Throughout his career, Dr. Paltsyn has led numerous projects with remarkable success. He is particularly proud of developing over 20 projects for GEF focusing on biodiversity conservation, sustainable livelihoods, and climate adaptation, which secured $145 million in funding for developing countries. His efforts have significantly contributed to protecting endangered species, such as the snow leopard, Altai argali, African elephant, and many others.
Dr. Paltsyn's academic background has been instrumental in his professional achievements. After earning a master's degree at Moscow State University in 1993, he received a PhD in Conservation Biology at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) in 2018. Further enhancing his expertise, he obtained a Project Management Professional certification from the Project Management Institute in 2020.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Dr. Paltsyn is actively involved in civic associations and has contributed to creative publications and projects aimed at conservation. Recognition for his contributions includes such awards as the Robert Burgess Graduate Scholarship in Ecology from SUNY-ESF and the WWF Prince Bernhard Scholarship for Nature Conservation.
