Dr. Zieren is a distinguished professor of family medicine at the DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine at Lincoln Memorial University. Since joining the faculty twelve years ago, she has been dedicated to educating future osteopathic physicians, teaching family medicine topics, nutrition, rural medicine, and osteopathic manipulation techniques. Dr. Zieren's commitment to osteopathic medicine extends beyond the classroom, as she has been a board member of the Tennessee Board of Osteopathic Examination since 2015. Prior to her tenure as a professor, Dr. Zieren practiced as a physician for over three decades with J. Michael Holder, DO, in a successful family medicine practice in Phoenix, Arizona.
Throughout her career, Dr. Zieren has been an active member of several industry-related organizations which have played a significant role in her professional development and achievements. She is a past president of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, making history as the first woman elected president since its inception in 1950. Additionally, Dr. Zieren has held memberships with the American Osteopathic Association, the Arizona Osteopathic Medical Association, and the Tennessee Osteopathic Medical Association, and served terms on both the Arizona and Tennessee Osteopathic Licensing Boards.
Dr. Zieren's academic background laid the foundation for her success in medicine and education. She began her education with a bachelor's degree in pre-medicine from Indiana State University, followed by earning a Master of Public Health in health administration from The University of Oklahoma in 1973. In 1980, Dr. Zieren earned a Doctor of Osteopathy from the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Oklahoma State University. She attributes her success to exceptional communication skills and enjoys connecting with people through humor.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Dr. Zieren is deeply involved in community service and extracurricular activities that reflect her civic-minded spirit and passion for music. She supports the animal shelter and serves as a volunteer physician at Remote Area Medical nonprofit clinics. Additionally, Dr. Zieren serves as a faculty sponsor for students participating in various initiatives. She plays an active role in her church choir, as well as being a flutist for the Lincoln Memorial University concert band and has even been the pianist for the Walters State Community College Jazz Band.
Dr. Zieren's contributions to medicine and the community have not gone unnoticed. She has received numerous awards including the Master Preceptor Award from the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, the Outstanding Female Leader Award from the same organization, and the Physician of the Year Award from the Arizona Osteopathic Medical Association, among others.
In her free time, Dr. Zieren finds joy in playing the flute and piano, walking in nature, reading extensively, and crafting homemade sourdough bread. These hobbies offer her relaxation and fulfillment outside of her demanding career in medicine and education.
