He then served as a software developer for several years before transitioning to legal services.
Mr. Bruce's career and leadership experience are extensive. He is currently a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Springer Law Governance and Technology series and has served as a consultant for the African Legal Information Institute since 2011. He has also contributed to the field as a reviewer for several conference program committees and as a member of the board of directors for the Southern African Institute for Policy and Research. His testimony before the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee in 2017 and numerous appointments as an invited expert, witness and consultant further exemplify his role as a trusted expert in legal informatics.
Mr. Bruce's academic background at Yale University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1974 and a Master of Fine Arts in stage management in 1979, has been instrumental in his career achievements. During this time, he learned computer programming as early internet technology was emerging.
Throughout his career, Mr. Bruce's contributions to the field have been recognized through several awards, including being named to the Fastcase 50 Inaugural Class by Fastcase in 2011 and the Legal Rebel Inaugural Class by ABA Journal in 2009. He was also awarded the Bert Gruver Prize by the Yale School of Drama in 1979. As an editor for the Journal of Open Access to Law since 2013, he has played a pivotal role in promoting transparency and open access to legal resources.
Mr. Bruce attributes his success to his intelligence and ability to quickly grasp new concepts. This has been the cornerstone of his success throughout his career. Outside his professional endeavors, he is civically involved with the Electronic Music Education and Preservation Project and actively plays electronic music himself in his free time.
