Leveraging more than 25 years of professional excellence, Ms. James is distinguished for her expertise in library science and passion for offering library services to underrepresented groups, especially children. Since 2024, she has served as the branch manager in the Washington Irving Library with the Brooklyn Public Library in New York, where she maintains responsibility for clerical duties, such as programming on behalf of the branch, managing budgets, developing programs and supervising library personnel. Joining the Brooklyn Public Library in 2000, she first served as a library associate for 14 years, then as a children's librarian between 2014 and 2016. From 2016 to 2017, she also thrived as a senior librarian, having thereafter been promoted to the rank of assistant branch manager from 2017 to 2024.
Earlier in her career, Ms. James excelled in a similar role in the Burke Library at the Union Theological Seminary of Columbia University, having served as an intern and the executive assistant to the director in 2014. Likewise, she was an administrative assistant for the Million MWM March Coordinating Council of Queens Inc. from 1996 to 1999. She commenced her career in 1996, serving as a data entry assistant for the Charles Barron City Council Campaign for one year.
Equipped with an advanced education, Ms. James first sought an undergraduate degree at St. John's University, receiving an Associate of Arts in political science and government, with a minor in paralegal studies, and a Bachelor of Arts in liberal arts in 1998. After many years in her field, she returned to higher education at the Katharine Gibbs School, receiving an associate degree in occupational studies, with a concentration in business, in 2005. Concluding her education, Ms. James subsequently earned a Master of Library Science from the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University in 2014. In conjunction with her degrees, she has also been certified in numerous areas, having completed pertinent courses through LinkedIn, Novelist, the University of South Florida and Lynda.com, among others.
In light of her outstanding undertakings in library services, Ms. James received the Rising to Occasion Award and the Leadership Forum Certificate from the Brooklyn Public Library in 2005 and 2008, respectively. In accounting for her success, she credits her perseverance, dedication and unwavering advocacy of her beliefs. Although she has experienced several career milestones, Ms. James is particularly proud of overseeing various events for children in her community, which have included Halloween parties and interactive games. In the coming years, Ms. James endeavors to advance further in her career while working toward exposing the librarianship profession to more minority groups throughout New York.
