Dr. Ragui A. Assaad Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Higher Education

Dr. Ragui A. Assaad serves as a professor of planning and public affairs at the University of Minnesota



He was named Teacher of the Year by the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs in 1992, 1995, 1996, 2000, and 2002.

    MINNEAPOLIS, MN, May 30, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Ragui A. Assaad has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Dr. Assaad's career in higher education with the University of Minnesota (UM) spans more than 30 years. He currently serves as a tenured professor of planning and public affairs in the Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs at UM. He is also the director of the international fellowship program at the school. His current work focuses on inequality of opportunity in education, labor markets, transitions from school-to-work, employment and unemployment dynamics, family formation, informality, labor market responses to economic shocks, and international migration. He began his career in the Twin Cities as an assistant professor of planning and public affairs at UM in 1990, was promoted to associate professor in 1997, and was elevated to full professor in 2003.

Born in Egypt, Dr. Assaad has had several visiting positions in his native country over the past 25 years, including at the American University in Cairo and the Economic Research Forum (ERF). For the past 40 years, he has served as a research fellow for the ERF. He also served as regional director for West Asia and North Africa programs for The Population Council, heading up the regional office in Cairo from 2005 to 2008.

Prior to his work at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Assaad worked as a principal investigator for the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics and a project manager for Environmental Quality International, both in Cairo.

Arriving in the United States at the age of 18, Dr. Assaad graduated from Stanford University in 1981 with two degrees: a Bachelor of Science in physics and a Master of Science in mechanical engineering. 10 years later, he earned a PhD in city and regional planning from Cornell University.

Dr. Assaad has received numerous awards from the University of Minnesota over the years, including being honored as Teacher of the Year by the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs in 1992, 1995, 1996, 2000, and 2002. He was also inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Teachers at UM in 2005.

As a commitment to his field, Dr. Assaad has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the Population Association of America, the Middle East Studies Association, the Economic Research Forum, the Center for The Study of Labor in Germany, the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population, the Arab Council of Social Sciences in Lebanon, and The Global Development Network.

Dr. Assaad is proud of organizing large data-collection efforts. In 1998, he started the Longitudinal Survey in Egypt, and the fifth wave of this survey there was conducted in 2023. He has also conducted such research in Jordan, Tunisia, and Sudan. Over the next five years, Dr. Assaad hopes to retire from his job as a teacher but continue to do research. Outside of work, his hobbies include scuba diving and traveling.
