Mr. Hunter has made significant strides in functional medicine as the co-owner of Upstream Functional Medicine in Colorado Springs, Colorado, alongside his wife. Since taking on this role in 2018, he has dedicated himself to a mission that equips, empowers, and educates individuals on understanding their body's needs for healing and growth. This innovative approach aims to liberate patients, enabling them to unlock their natural ability to heal.
With a career spanning over 20 years in conventional medicine as a family nurse practitioner, Mr. Hunter's further education into functional medicine radically opens the aperture on applying the science to health. Mr. Hunter's foray into functional medicine was deeply personal, driven by a desire to find better health solutions for his family. This quest was fueled by his daughter's autism diagnosis, which prompted him to seek more effective medical options that could better address her underlying causes.
While Mr. Hunter's professional focus remains on Upstream Functional Medicine, he is also looking ahead to the future. He aims to transition the practice into a sustainable business model that allows him and his wife to serve as founders. Their vision extends beyond day-to-day management towards making impactful contributions to functional medicine globally. They aspire to develop a new curriculum and model that can be replicated by practitioners worldwide, thereby broadening access to these practices. Although Mr. Hunter's methodology is still in its early stages, it holds promise for revolutionizing patient care through best practices that he plans to share through future publications.
Among other professional achievements, Mr. Hunter has served as an associate professor at the Denver School of Nursing (DCN). Notably, DCN is a private college with campuses in Denver and Houston.
The foundation of Mr. Hunter's expertise in functional medicine is built upon a solid educational background. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Science in Nursing with a specialization as a family nurse practitioner from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Further enhancing his qualifications, Mr. Hunter obtained a functional medicine certification from The Institute for Functional Medicine.
Apart from his work-related endeavors, Mr. Hunter served as a medical officer in the U.S. Air Force. He has also been involved on the board of directors for the American Nurse Association at the state level and as the vice president of the Southern Colorado Advanced Practice Nurse Association. Additionaly, he has served in advisory roles for the Denver Functional Forum and for a forward thinking supplement company.
Mr. Hunter attributes much of his success to his adversities and relentless pursuit of knowledge, enabling him to support his family and others facing health challenges.
