Upon earning his undergraduate degree, he received a master's degree and DDS from Ohio State University. Dr. Bertz also completed oral maxillofacial surgery training through Ohio State University and the University of Texas at Dallas and pursued PhD coursework and surgical training at the University of Texas.
Over the years, Dr. Bertz gained valuable higher education administration and medicine expertise in various positions with Mount Vernon Hospital in London, Zurich County Hospital in Switzerland, the University of Texas Medical School, and the University of Texas at Austin. Similarly, he lent his considerable expertise to the U.S. government as a national consultant to the United States Air Force surgeon general. Dr. Bertz also served as the dean of clinical affairs for the University of Texas Medical School at Houston.
Backed by years of professional experience, Dr. Bertz is an emeritus professor at the University of Texas, where he established a service called Life Flight with Dr. James Red Duke, a helicopter service through Herman Hospital and the University of Texas Medical School of Houston. Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, he aligns himself with the American College of Surgeons. Previously, Dr. Bertz was the president of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and was affiliated with Sigma Chi.
In light of his professional achievements, Dr. Bertz won a Significant Award from Sigma Chi and received a Man of the Year Award in 2019. While his career has been filled with highlights, he takes the most pride in serving as dean of student and academic affairs at the University of Texas Medical School, where he also excelled as assistant to the vice chancellor of health affairs. Other standout accomplishments in Dr. Bertz's career include operating on 3,000 children with cleft palates in third-world countries and fixing a cleft lip and nose on a 42-year-old Guatemalan woman.
Though hard work and dedication have brought him far in his career, Dr. Bertz credits his success to a little bit of luck, passion for what he does, and his parents' support. Looking ahead, he intends to continue parlaying his knowledge to others as an emeritus professor.
