Dr. Duncan, an adjunct professor of Teacher Graduate Workshops at Friends University, joined the Wichita, Kansas, faculty in 2016. Teaching in the field of education exclusively online via the institution's virtual platform, she instructs students during the evenings and weekends when class is in session. Dr. Duncan loves providing one-on-one guidance to educators through the virtual platform.
Previously, Dr. Duncan was a division training coordinator for the State of Kansas from 2013 to 2021. During this time, she had the honor of helping author a comprehensive mentoring training curriculum for the state at the governor's request for the statewide initiative.
Among other notable roles, Dr. Duncan was a training director for a state government agency between 2013 and 2015. She also worked as a senior trainer and independent contractor from 2011 to 2013, and as a student teacher supervisor and science methods instructor at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, between 2012 and 2013. Dr. Duncan has notably taught public school, private school, and a year of homeschool during her tenure in education. Mary was part of the founding members who began a youth program that spread to area high schools and middle schools over the last 20 years.
Since 1989, Dr. Duncan has remained the founder and freelance author of "Tools for Motherhood." Through her website, mothers are able to sign up to participate in various online courses and gain access to free tutorials, learning materials, and more. Looking toward the future, Dr. Duncan aspires to expand her "Tools for Motherhood" program which includes her recent publication, "Tools for Motherhood Resource Guide: 1000+ School Readiness Activities Moms Can Utilize with Their Young Children, Aged 0-5", to enhance educational success.
Among other writing accomplishments, Dr. Duncan became an Amazon bestselling author in several categories when newly released. She has published four books, which are all available on Amazon.com. One of the four is a children's book, "I Love You…Anyway," while the remaining three focus on doctoral research regarding empowering mothers called, "You Really Can Make a Difference: 7 Strategies Moms can use to support school readiness for their young child".
Besides teaching and writing, Dr. Duncan has excelled as a speaker, presenter, and trainer for various symposiums, including international events. She has notably presented at the Oxford International Round Table Symposium in Oxford, England (and has been invited back in 2024), the World Education Conference in Panama City, Panama, and the OMEP-USA National Education Conference in Atlanta, and presented on the U.S. keynote speaker panel at the Belize International Symposium in Central America. Dr. Duncan also had the privilege of presenting at the state capitol for an event organized by the governor to celebrate authors from Kansas. Additionally, she conducted numerous training sessions for parents, students, educators, and staff members at state, national, and international levels, ranging from teachers to government bureau chiefs and front-line workers.
As a dedicated civic leader, Dr. Duncan served as the president of the Friends University alumni advisory board from 2010 to 2011, was an advisory board member and mentor mom for Mothers of Preschoolers International between 2007 and 2009, iMom Mentor from 2020-2021, and devoted over 3 decades to volunteering with various mothers' groups using the Tools for Motherhood material. She was PTO President at her son's middle school, Co-Chair for High School Baccalaureate, and served as Subcommittee Chair on the district's long range planning committee. Dr. Duncan dedicated time from 2020-2021 to serving as founding Chair of a university pilot group of instructors and minority community members, who started a pilot project providing scholarships for men of color who want to become teachers. From 2011 to 2018, Dr. Duncan served on a state-level education council as a member as well as the governor's representative to the council, on a few occasions giving testimony to House Ways and Means, and Senate Subcommittee on behalf of the children across the state the council represented, to raise more money. Moreover, she and her family have dedicated time to serving meals at a local rescue mission or community thanksgiving dinner for those in need in the city.
Dr. Duncan has been a member of the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society, Professional Women, and OMEP International as the incoming secretary. Looking ahead, Dr. Duncan plans to travel and train across the state, create leadership and supervisory training curriculum, and contribute as a curriculum developer for a mentoring curriculum to retain deep learning in the organization. She would also like to continue to serve as an adjunct professor for Teacher Graduate Workshops, publish more books about Tools for Motherhood themes, continue to serve young moms, and continue to make a positive difference for this next generation.
