Before his current role, Dr. Javidan served as the dean of research at Thunderbird School of Global Management from 2007 to 2011, overseeing various research initiatives and contributing to the school's academic excellence. Between 2004 and 2009, he was a professor and director of the Garvin Center for Languages and Cultures of International Management, emphasizing his commitment to cross-cultural education. Dr. Javidan's academic journey also included significant contributions to the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary in Canada, where he held various positions from professor to chairperson of the strategy and global management area between 1990 and 2004.
Dr. Javidan was recruited to Arizona State from the University of Calgary. Earlier in his career, he was a teaching associate and instructor at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Javidan also garnered success as a visiting professor at INSEAD, Simon Fraser University, and the University of Victoria. Moreover, he held various business roles as a senior advisor on strategic issues at TransCanada from 1997 to 2000 and was employed by Honeywell in Iran in 1976.
Dr. Javidan's career includes two major highlights: first, his leadership of the GLOBE project, which started in the early 1990s and is the most extensive cross-country study of its kind. The latest phase of this project has significantly advanced our understanding of cultural norms and global leadership practices by analyzing data from over 50,000 managers and professionals across 144 countries. The second highlight is his creation of a unique scientific instrument called Global Mindset Inventory (GMI), which measures an individual's potential for success in global roles and is used by over 70000 managers and professionals worldwide. Dr. Javidan holds a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering from Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, Iran, in 1976. Subsequently, he earned a Master of Business Administration and a Doctor of Philosophy in strategic management from the University of Minnesota in 1977 and 1983, respectively.
As a testament to his commitment to his field, Dr. Javidan is a member of several prominent professional organizations, such as the Pan-Pacific Business Association, the Academy of Management, and the Academy of International Business. He served as the vice chair of the Board of Directors of the International Leadership Association. Furthermore, Dr. Javidan was elected a fellow of The Leadership Trust.
