WESTFORD, MA, June 14, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Michael S. Esposito has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. Dr. Esposito is a distinguished leader in his field. He pioneered pacesetting techniques to identify and analyze REC, REM and SPO genes that govern genetic mutability, recombination, meiosis and sporulation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Several of these genes have counterparts in the human genome where they are involved in human diseases such as Xeroderma pigmentosum and breast cancer. As a divisional fellow and senior scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory at the University of California Berkeley Dr. Esposito embarked on an international journey in teaching imparting his vast knowledge as a visiting professor at the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Trieste, Italy. This role allowed him to teach students worldwide about yeast genetics and molecular biology, fostering the next generation of scientists and entrepreneurs.
Throughout his career, Dr. Esposito has achieved significant milestones that underscore his expertise and dedication to genetics and biochemistry. As a tenured associate professor and chair pro-tem in the biology department at the University of Chicago he was a member of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) genetics granting awards committee for five years. He was also a visiting professor in the biology department of the University of Paris, Orsay Center, France where he trained predoctoral genetic students.
In preparation for his illustrious career, Dr. Esposito earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Brooklyn College and a Doctor of Philosophy in genetics from the University of Washington, Seattle. His postdoctoral work was conducted in the molecular biology department at the University of Wisconsin, where he was an NIH postdoctoral fellow for two years before joining the biology department.
Dr. Esposito's contributions to science extend beyond research and academia. He has been an active member of the international community of yeast researchers and was a founding associate editor of Current Genetics, a peer-reviewed scientific journal. Additionally, he is an associate member of Sigma Xi. As a dedicated community member, Dr. Esposito works with the Citizens Advisory Group in Richmond, California. As the former chair of the group's toxicology committee, he consults on environmental safety and toxicology assessments at landfills.
