Over the years, Dr. Kelly has utilized his experience in healthcare management as the chief executive officer of Sharon Hospital, Putnam Community Medical Center, and Halstead Hospital, through which he has increased outpatient visits and total income. During the early stages of his career, he gained valuable expertise in the field through such companies as Essent, LifePoint, Doctors Regional Medical Center, Fort Madison Community Hospital, and a psychiatric hospital in Wisconsin.
An expert in his field, Dr. Kelly earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Winona State University in 1975 and a master's degree in psychology and counseling from Saint Mary's University of Minnesota. Subsequently, Dr. Kelly received a Doctor of Healthcare Administration from the University of Phoenix and has become a fellow through the American College of Health Care Executives and the American College of Health Care Administrators. Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, Dr. Kelly has aligned himself with several organizations, including the North Dakota Health Information Exchange, the American Hospital Association, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota, Vision West North Dakota and the North Dakota Hospital Association, as well as the American College of Healthcare Executives and the American College of Healthcare Administrators.
Due to his vast knowledge, Dr. Kelly has contributed to several peer-reviewed articles in such journals as the Journal of Healthcare Management and the Journal of Rural Health. Collaboratively and as a sole author, he has written such publications as "Practitioner Application: Healthcare is a Team Sport: Stress, Resilience, and Correlates of Well-Being Among Health System Employees in a Crisis," "Anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, and professional quality of life among the hospital workforce during a global health pandemic," and "Influence of years of experience and age on hospital workforce compassion satisfaction, anxiety, depression, stress, and burnout during pandemic: Implications of retention."
In light of his professional achievements, Dr. Kelly has been honored many times, earning the North Dakota Friend of Medicine Award, Grassroots Champion award from the American Hospital Association, and the Outstanding Rural Health Professional Award. While his career has been filled with highlights, he takes the most pride in developing the only Employee Stock Ownership Plan nationwide at a hospital in Missouri and orchestrating a team around McKenzie Health. Though hard work and dedication have brought him far in his career, he credits his success to his humble beginnings and desire to better himself.
