MONROE, GA, June 17, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Bruce Sabatino, MD, Ph.D. with the Albert Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. Individuals are selected based on factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field.

Dr. Bruce Sabatino is a retired Emergency Medicine physician who practiced in Georgia and Mississippi for about 35 years. He graduated from Syracuse University with Honors in Physiology in 1973 and from Albany Medical College with a Doctor of Medicine in 1983. During his senior year of Medical School he received the CIBA Award, given to the medical student who has made the greatest contribution to the local community and the community at large. This award was in recognition of his editorship of the Albany Medical Nexus, the medical student newspaper.

In 1985, Dr. Sabatino completed two years of an OB/GYN residency at Travis Air Force Base (AFB) in California and then opted for a career path change within the Air Force, attending the six-week training program in Aerospace Medicine at Brooks AFB, San Antonio, TX, and then serving as a Flight Surgeon in the 347th Tactical Fighter Wing at Moody AFB, Valdosta, GA.

Following his honorable discharge, he began the full-time practice of Emergency Medicine, finding a niche in small, rural emergency departments in Critical Access Hospitals. During his career, Dr. Sabatino has also practiced in General Medicine and Occupational Medicine clinics.

In 1995, he attended a four-week training course in Occupational Medicine at the University of Cincinnati, and became a certified Medical Review Officer. In 1997, he became Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and during the next 12 years, frequently served as an Oral Board Examiner for the Board of Certification in Emergency Medicine, of the American Association of Physician Specialists.

In 1992-93, Dr. Sabatino took eight months off from clinical practice to complete a lifelong dream – the completion of his Ph.D. in Experimental Pathology. During the six years between graduation from college and his entering medical school (1973-1979), Sabatino was a graduate student at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, 7th division of SUNY at Buffalo. To improve his credentials for application to medical school, he completed an MS in Natural Sciences and enrolled in a Ph.D. program in Experimental Pathology.

Due to a snag in his Ph.D. research, he was not able to complete the program before entering medical school. During summer vacations in the first two years of medical school, and during time allotted for research electives, he was able to complete his research before graduation. He was not able, however, to write the Ph.D. thesis until years later, when he took an eight-month sabbatical from practice to do so.

Finally, in 1993 the job was completed, and in February 1993 he defended his research in Buffalo NY, graduating from SUNY at Buffalo as Bruce Sabatino, MD, Ph.D. in June of 1993. Sabatino's story was told in a newspaper article in The Tifton (Georgia) Gazette on March 10, 1993, entitled, "Local Physician Realizes Quest for Ph.D. Completes Thesis Over a 20-Year Period of Time." Dr. Sabatino's research, entitled "The Renal Handling of IgG in the Aging Rat and in Experimental Kidney Disease" was published in 1997 in the Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine. He also received an AMA Physician Recognition Award in continuing medical education, for self-directed learning.

During his career, Dr. Sabatino has seen remarkable advancements in medicine and surgery. He believes this trend will continue and even accelerate, so that doctors retiring 40 years from now will be just as amazed in advances in clinical practice as he is now.

Dr. Sabatino is married to Beverly (Baum) Sabatino, and the couple celebrated 50 years of marriage in August of 2023. They attend St. Anna's Catholic Church in Monroe, GA. They have two children and five grandchildren. They frequently attend performing arts events in Athens and Atlanta GA.

Dr. Sabatino is very active in the Knights of Columbus and coordinates a statewide K of C Pro-Life Billboard program. Dr. Sabatino also enjoys growing Bonsai trees, listening to music, and woodworking.

Dr. Sabatino's life motto has been, "Hard work always pays off."
