Mr. Neylan is a distinguished architect with over three decades of professional experience in his field. As the owner of Robert J. Neylan Architects, Ltd., he has led the firm with a unique approach to business and design, focusing on high-end residential projects that have garnered widespread acclaim. His career began with his tenure at Nagle Hartray Danker Kagan McKay Penney Architects Ltd., where he served as an associate principal beginning in 1988 before founding his own firm in 2000.
Throughout his career, Mr. Neylan has been known for his hands-on approach to architecture and client relations. Operating with a virtual office model, he and his team work remotely, allowing for flexibility and extensive travel to project sites across various locations, such as Dallas, Atlanta, Lake Michigan Shoreline, Boulder Colorado and Jackson Hole Wyoming. This variety has enabled the firm to complete a diverse range of projects from modern art galleries, to historic renovations, to a commercial horse farm. Mr. Neylan's educational background laid the foundation for his successful career. He earned a Master of Architecture from the University of Illinois, Chicago in 1985 and a Bachelor of Arts in political science and psychology from Vanderbilt University in 1984. He believes that his studies in psychology and political science have been instrumental in understanding client needs and navigating the complex world of construction, budgets and managing client expectations.
Mr. Neylan's commitment to excellence in architecture has been recognized through numerous awards and honors. He is very proud of being granted the American Institute of Architects Distinguished Building Award in 2006 and has also been honored with seven Best of Houzz awards and inclusion in The Design Bureau's Top 100 Designers. The firm has won various national competitions sponsored by industry leaders including Subzero/Wolf and LaCantina. Mr. Neylan's firm has become resilient to economic downturns by focusing on high-end, residential properties as the source of their main profit margins. The firm has weathered both the 2008 financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic by taking on an ever-expanding range of project types. In addition to his residential work, Mr. Neylan has written and received several Federal grants that have allowed him to design and construct playgrounds and outdoor facilities for Chicago public schools as a pro bono service.
Outside of his professional life, Mr. Neylan enjoys spending time with his family, travelling the world, and practicing woodworking and furniture building as hobbies. Upcoming projects in production promise to further advance the firm's design legacy and advance the state of architectural design.
