Dr. Fleiszar has made significant contributions in her career as a medical geneticist and an advocate for children with disabilities. In 2018, she co-founded Life House Atlanta, the first pediatric respite and palliative care home in Georgia, where she currently serves as the acting executive director. This role allows her to combine her professional expertise with her passion for helping children with disabilities by providing respite care that supports both the children and their families.
Before assuming her current role, Dr. Fleiszar was a board member for the disabilities ministry at the Archdiocese of Atlanta from 2008 to 2016, demonstrating her commitment to serving those with special needs. Her career includes extensive experience in academia, serving at Kennesaw State University for over three decades as a professor and researcher, teaching human and medical genetics, with a specialty in cytogenetics. At the end of her teaching career, she was honored with the title of Professor Emerita.
Dr. Fleiszar's professional journey is also marked by her involvement in various industry-related organizations, such as the American Society of Human Genetics and the National Society of Genetic Counselors. She is also a member of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce, the Kennesaw Business Association, the Cobb Collaborative, the North Cobb Civitan Club, and the Catholic Medical Association.
Dr. Fleiszar's academic achievements have played a pivotal role in her success. She has earned a Doctor of Philosophy in human genetics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and a Bachelor of Science in biology from Loyola University Chicago. Further enhancing her credentials is her certification as a medical geneticist from the American Board of Medical Genetics, granted in 1982. Her dedication to her industry has been recognized through various awards, such as Teacher of the Year at Kennesaw State University and various fellowships and scholarships during her academic career.
Dr. Fleiszar attributes much of her success to the support and encouragement from her family and friends throughout her educational and professional journey. Inspired by advancements in genetics and motivated by a desire to make a difference in people's lives, she founded Life House Atlanta after learning about a similar program in Arizona. She is currently working to fulfill the mission of Life House Atlanta: to provide a home away from home where families and their children with life-limiting illnesses can enjoy a temporary getaway from the constant demands of specialized round-the-clock care, at no cost to the families.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Dr. Fleiszar is deeply involved in civic activities. She has served as a volunteer at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church since 2001 and served on the hospice board of advisors for WellStar Community Hospice.
Outside of her career, Dr. Fleiszar enjoys playing tennis and running and is looking forward to learning how to play pickleball. Her focus in the upcoming years is on maintaining her health in order to continue supporting those around her effectively.
