Mark Wietecha Celebrates Enduring Health Care Consulting Career

Mr. Wietecha has carved a distinguished career in health care management and advocacy, particularly within the realm of children's hospitals. As a new managing director at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips LLP since 2024, he brings decades of experience to his role. His expertise lies in the strategy and governance of academic medical centers with a focus on children's hospitals, including navigating the complex relationships between clinical, educational, research and community missions. His leadership has been instrumental in the success of numerous national business consulting operations and policy initiatives that support children's hospitals. Notably, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he played a pivotal role in securing over $3 billion in relief payments for children's hospitals through collaborative efforts with the nation's children's hospitals, their champions, and the White House and Congress.

Prior to his current role, Mr. Wietecha served as the founding president and chief executive officer of the Children's Hospital Association from 2011 to 2023. In this capacity, he led the organization through significant challenges and opportunities, enhancing its national presence and influence. Before joining the Children's Hospital Association, he was a senior partner and executive chairman of the board at Kurt Salmon (now part of Accenture) from 1985 until 2011. His early career included a stint as a senior sales representative at Upjohn Company from 1982 to 1983.

Mr. Wietecha is also recognized for his involvement in various industry-related organizations. He has held positions such as a director and former chairman of the board at Virtual PICU Systems since 2012 and served as a trustee for the Council of Teaching Hospitals at the Association of American Medical Colleges from 2013 to 2023. His leadership roles extend to being a trustee and chair of the Health System Board of Overseers at UCLA from 2013 until 2015 and serving on boards in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

Mr. Wietecha's academic background laid the foundation of his professional success, beginning with a Bachelor of Science with High Honors in biology from Grand Valley State University in 1979. He subsequently earned a Master of Science in pharmacology from the Ohio State University in 1981, followed by a Master of Business Administration from Indiana University in 1984. Additionally, he completed postgraduate executive business education at Harvard University. He attributes his success to his passion for his work and the continuous learning it entails. Working closely with children's hospitals has provided him with a profound sense of purpose and joy.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Mr. Wietecha is actively involved with several social change-minded organizations. He has contributed to OpenNotes as an advisory board member from 2017 to 2023 and has been an active member of the Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative at Johns Hopkins University since 2017. His commitment to improving children's health is further evidenced by his trusteeship at the National Foundation to End Child Abuse Now from 2019 until 2023.
