A seasoned counselor with years of expertise working with ADHD, High Functioning Autism, and learning disorders, Ms. Kohnen excels as the founder and clinical director of growth for Grow Through Life Counseling, which provides outpatient psychotherapy to children, teenagers, adults, couples and families.. In this capacity, she maintains responsibility for staffing, marketing, networking, and more for the practice's eight locations and 60-plus employees. Due to her vast knowledge, Ms. Kohnen has authored several publications, including "13 Reasons 'Why Am I Going to Counseling?' for Teens: A Guide for Teens Starting Counseling" and "Why Am I Going to Counseling?: A Guide to Children Starting Counseling."
Before establishing Grow Through Life Counseling, Ms. Kohnen was an adjunct faculty member with the San Diego University for Integrative Studies and an outpatient mental health provider for Psych Care, Inc. During the early stages of her career, Ms. Kohnen gained valuable expertise in behavioral care management with Wellpoint Anthem Blue Cross and counseling, and psychotherapy in various roles with Horizon Health, the Drake Institute of Behavioral Medicine, and the University of California, San Diego Moores Cancer Center, through which she taught parenting strategies for advancing research.
An expert in her field, Ms. Kohnen holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with minors in business and Spanish from Indiana University Bloomington and a master's degree in counseling psychology from the University of Phoenix. Subsequently, she expanded her knowledge by becoming a licensed marriage and family therapist through the Board of Behavioral Sciences. Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, Ms. Kohnen aligns herself with the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists.
In conjunction with her work, Ms. Kohnen contributes to her community by fundraising through JDRF International. Additionally, she is a Travelers Aid International board member and one of the founding members of San Diego Women for Good. While her career has been filled with highlights, she takes the most pride in fostering bonds within the community and giving to others. As a long time member of Business Networking International (BNI) She has passed more than 1.1 million in business to other small businesses and entrepreneurs in her community. Though hard work and dedication have brought her far in her career, she credits her success to her compassion and genuine care for others. Looking ahead, Ms. Kohnen intends to expand her practice in Southern California and foster her love of improv comedy with her group Shared Delusions Improv which performs locally in San Diego.
