Prior to his current role, he served as a principal software engineer at Gigamon from 2022 to 2023 after being promoted from senior staff software engineer.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Bernstein was a staff member in research and development for cloud computing at VMware. During this period, he played a crucial role in integrating Likewise technology into ESX and developing new authentication protocols. His innovative work contributed to the acquisition of VMware by Dell Corporation and later by Broadcom, underscoring the value of Mr. Bernstein's contributions. Before his time at VMware, he worked as a software engineer at BeyondTrust for one year and held the same positions at Likewise Software for the preceding two years.
Prior to these roles, Mr. Bernstein served as a software engineer at several companies, including Certified Security Solutions, WatchGuard Technologies, Sierra Geophysics and Cybersafe Corporation, accomplishing significant feats at the final company from 1993 to 2001. In this position, he played a pivotal role in transforming the company into a nearly billion-dollar enterprise by stabilizing and making its product maintainable across various UNIX systems. Mr. Bernstein's career began with his service in the U.S. Navy from 1986 to 1990, where he specialized in weather forecasting and oceanography for the Trident submarine fleet.
Mr. Bernstein's educational background laid the foundation for his successful career. He earned a Bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1986 and obtained a Bachelor of Science in computer science from Chapman College in 1989, an opportunity that his service in the U.S. Navy presented him. His interest in software engineering began during his physics studies when he discovered a passion for programming.
Outside of his professional life, Mr. Bernstein enjoys personal hobbies in radio and electronics, music, cooking, bicycling and skiing. In the upcoming years, he plans to obtain a job that aligns with his personal interests and allows him to contribute meaningfully to the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) community. He is particularly interested in leveraging his software expertise to support MS research efforts, focusing on molecular biology or neuroscience. Despite being diagnosed with MS in the early nineties, he has managed the condition well and remains driven to make a positive impact in the workplace.
