Marquis Who's Who Honors Aly Colón-Del Valle for Expertise in Media Ethics and Higher Education

Mr. Colón-Del Valle has distinguished himself as a preeminent figure in media ethics, holding the esteemed position of Knight Chair in Media Ethics at Washington and Lee University since 2014. In this role, he is instrumental in shaping the ethical compass of future journalists and communications professionals through his rigorous teaching and development of two institutes each year. Dedicated to teaching and writing, Mr. Colón-Del Valle's main priority is ensuring he is available to his students. He also advises graduates and is committed to helping students understand the importance of ethics.

Before his tenure at Washington and Lee University, Mr. Colón-Del Valle was instrumental in the field as a Director of Standards and Practices at NBC News & Telemundo News from 2012 to 2014. He served on the NBC's Standards and Practices team, where he worked with colleagues on addressing ethical standards and practices across both networks. Prior to that he worked as a minority outreach consultant for Public Radio International in 2012, and as the principal of Colón Communications between 2010 and 2012. Mr. Colón-Del Valle's expertise was sought by the American Society of News Editors as a consultant from 2011 to 2012.

Mr. Colón-Del Valle addressed journalism ethics and diversity at the Poynter Institute, where he served as a group leader for ethics, reporting, writing, and editing and diversity from 1997 to 2007. He also worked as a Poynter professional and consultant between 2007 and 2011. The institute notably offers summer programs for college students. It has a long-standing history of creating seminars for professionals in all areas of journalism. Mr. Colón-Del Valle's career journey also included positions as a communications manager at Avanade, Inc. from 2008 to 2010, as a diversity program manager at Safeco Insurance between 2007 and 2008. He also held editing and writing positions at The Seattle Times and The Herald in Everett, Washington.

Mr. Colón-Del Valle's academic foundation includes a Bachelor of Arts in journalism from Loyola University New Orleans, and a Master of Arts in journalism from Stanford University. He also earned a certificate from the Knight Bagehot Fellowship in the graduate school of journalism at Columbia University where he spent a year studying at Columbia's Graduate School of Business. He completed a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship on ethics at the University of Kansas. He also engaged in a two-week program in banking through the American Bankers Association Stonier Graduate School of Banking.

In addition to his professional achievements, Mr. Colón-Del Valle has been a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, reflecting his ongoing commitment to excellence and ethical standards within the industry. His writing on ethics and diversity issues, have been published by the Poynter Institute.

Mr. Colón-Del Valle is a professional committed to ethical values. As a respected industry leader, he has been interviewed by news organizations and other organizations about media ethics. One example involved The Chicago Council on Global Affairs interview in which he addressed how journalists refer to those involved in combat or war. In the future, Mr. Colón-Del Valle hopes to continue helping journalists as they seek an ethical approach in their news coverage.
