With 18 years in the field, both as a teacher and principal, he has demonstrated a profound commitment to fostering academic excellence and personal growth among students and staff alike. Since 2022, he has utilized his talents as a school administrator for Bertie County Schools, a public school unit in Northeastern North Carolina.
Dr. Matthews began his career in education immediately after earning his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from the School of Music at East Carolina University in 2006. Inspired by his love for teaching, he accepted a role as a Director of Bands for Onslow County Schools, where he cultivated young musicians' talents and instilled a love for music. He went on to serve as a Band Director for the Craven County School District in 2009 before returning to Onslow County Schools as an Exceptional Children's Program Teacher Assistant in 2010.
In 2011, Dr. Matthews took leadership of the band program at South Central High School within Pitt County Schools. His leadership there extended beyond the band room, impacting students' overall educational experiences. This period marked a significant transition in his career as he moved into administration, and he became an Assistant Principal at Topsail High School in Pender County Schools in 2017.
Dr. Matthews' educational journey is marked by continuous advancement and dedication to professional growth. He earned a Master's Degree in School Administration from the College of Education at East Carolina University in 2013, followed by a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Liberty University, graduating with high distinction in 2023. His academic achievements have been instrumental in shaping his approach to leadership and administration, allowing him to effectively collaborate with teachers across various curricular domains.
Throughout his career, Dr. Matthews has been actively involved in several professional organizations, including the North Carolina Principals and Assistant Principals Association, North Carolina Association of School Administrators, National Association for Music Education, and North Carolina Music Educators Association. He is also a member of the Rho Alpha Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and a member of both Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society and Omega Nu Lambda National Honor Society.
Beyond his professional commitments, Dr. Matthews is deeply engaged in civic activities. He volunteers with the Onslow County United Way, providing weekend meals for students through the C.H.E.W. Program, as well as the Adpot-a-Highway program through his fraternal organization. His dedication to community service reflects his broader mission to support underserved populations.
Married since 2009, Dr. Matthews is a devoted father to three children. He has recently established a non-profit organization called The P.I.P.E.L.I.N.E. Project (Pathways to Inclusive Progression in Education through Leadership and Inspired Next-Generation Empowerment) to assist minority and underserved students by enhancing their marketability for higher education and increasing their eligibility for scholarship opportunities. As the Founder and CEO of this initiative, Dr. Matthews aims to facilitate transformative changes initially focusing on students statewide before expanding nationwide. His goal is to empower students from diverse backgrounds to successfully navigate transitions from high school to college, ensuring increased admissions and graduation rates among individuals of color, first-generation college students, and those from other underserved communities.
