BELL CANYON, CA, June 28, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Robert Manuel Albarran II, PhD, postdoctoral researcher in the department of atmospheric and oceanic sciences of the University of California Los Angeles, was selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the Massachusetts regional edition of Forbes.
Recognized for his expertise in engineering physics and astronomy, Dr. Albarran has accrued more than 10 years of excellence in his areas of interest. Since 2022, he has served as a postdoctoral researcher in the department of atmospheric and ocean sciences at the University of California Los Angeles, working in conjunction with the Center for Geospace Storms (CGS) NASA DRIVE Science Center. Interested in astronomy from a formative age, Dr. Albarran was influenced by a college professor, who intertwined the sciences with the arts, thereby sparking in Dr. Albarran a thirst for knowledge. In this regard, Dr. Albarran began viewing mathematics and physics from a creative lens and witnessing science behaving as a creative process allowed him to seize opportunities for a career in the industry.
Among his many vocational interests, Dr. Albarran emphasizes the significance of computer modeling of space plasmas, allowing scientists to prolong the lifespan of orbiting satellites by mitigating the effects of charged particles. He also stresses that with society's technological advances and supercomputers, it has become easier to resolve issues from decades past with precision and power. Among his many career highlights, he is exceptionally proud of his dissertation studies, wherein he developed a supercomputer code to describe space plasma from a kinetic perspective. Additionally, he has published works in relation to the interface between industry, government and academia in heliophysics. Likewise, Dr. Albarran is gratified by receiving the John Mather Nobel Scholar Award from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in 2011.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Albarran served as a MATLAB technician, physics and chemistry tutor, physics instructor and residential doctoral research assistant at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University between 2012 and 2022. He also served as an astronomy and physics tutor for The Research Corporation at the University of Hawaii in 2012 and on the review panel of NASA Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences. Dr. Albarran currently serves as a member of the High Performance Computing (HPC) Allocations Panel of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). Notably, he has helped advocate for space physics in the U.S. House of Representatives to senators and state representatives as a Local Science Partner and member of the Space Physics and Aeronomy (SPA) Advocacy Committee of the American Geophysical Union (AGU).
Dr. Albarran attended the University of Hawaii at Hilo, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in astronomy in 2012. Subsequently, he received a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy, both in engineering physics, from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 2014 and 2022, respectively. Alongside his educational credentials, Dr. Albarran completed internships at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), The Research Corporation at the University of Hawaii and the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan.
