In 2008, Dr. Ruby was appointed as the interim president at Mississippi State University for a brief period, a role that stands out as a significant milestone in his career. He served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1963, commissioned in the rank of second lieutenant through ROTC, and retired as a major from the US Army Reserve. His military career included active duty, National Guardsman and Army Reserve. His military background instilled in him a sense of discipline and leadership that has been evident throughout his career in academia.
His educational foundation also played a crucial role in shaping his career. Dr. Ruby earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in political science from Mississippi State University in 1961 and 1966, respectively. He then went on to complete his Doctorate in Education at the University of Mississippi in 1973. Dr. Ruby attributes much of his success to the exceptional teamwork and support provided by the staff at Mississippi State University.
Showing further commitment to his field, Dr. Ruby has held memberships in organizations such as the Southern Association for College Student Affairs, the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, Pi Delta Epsilon, Phi Alpha Theta, Phi Kappa Phi, and Sigma Chi, and he belongs to the Military Officers Association of America.
Beyond his professional life, Dr. Ruby is actively involved in his community through various roles, including serving as a Sunday school teacher and member of several committees at the United Methodist Church. He has also served as a trustee and president for the Starkville Separate Municipal School District. His contributions have been recognized with several awards, including National Alumnus of the Year from Mississippi State University as well as ROTC Alumnus of the Year.
In his personal life, Dr. Ruby is a devoted family man. He and his wife are the parents of two grown children. He gave many after dinner talks of a humorous nature. His interests included MSU athletics, Civil War history and family history, showcasing a well-rounded personality that extends beyond his academic and administrative achievements.
