Dr. Adams is a distinguished associate professor at Western Carolina University, where he has dedicated over 30 years to the field of electrical engineering. As an expert in digital signal processing and biomedical applications, his career is marked by significant contributions to both academia and industry. Dr. Adams has held the title of professor emeritus at Western Carolina University since 2023. Before this, he served as associate professor from 2009 to 2023. During his tenure, he also became interim electrical engineer program director from 2019 to 2020 and was the ECET program director from 2007 to 2019. Additionally, he was the electrical engineer program director from 2009 to 2016 and was interim department head of engineering and technology from 2013 to 2014. In 2012, he briefly held the position of assistant department head of engineering and technology.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Adams was an assistant professor at Western Carolina University from 2003 to 2007. Before joining Western Carolina University, he was a graduate teaching assistant at The University of Alabama at Huntsville from 1996 to 2001. He also lectured at Buffalo State College from 1993 to 1996. His industry experience includes roles such as research engineer, EMC test engineer, space systems database engineer, and RF propagation engineer at the IIT Research Institute between 1982 and 1993.

Dr. Adams' notable achievements include teaching over 30 classes in project-based electronics, electric circuit design courses, and product design classes. He supervised the research of 8 graduate students, led a graduate student on a thesis describing a novel Parkinson's disease detection method, and guided a student team to a robotics competition for ten years, participating in the regional SoutheastCon competition. His dedication to education has earned him several awards, including the Commitment to Excellence Award in 2022, the Distinguished Teaching Award in 2020, and the Student Engagement Award in 2016.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Adams is an active member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the American Society of Engineering Educators. His involvement in these organizations underscores his commitment to advancing the field of electrical engineering.

Dr. Adams' academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York, in 1982. He then earned a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1991. He completed his academic pursuits with a Doctorate in Electrical Engineering from The University of Alabama in Huntsville, Alabama, in 2004. Dr. Adams attributes his success to hard work and enjoying his profession.

Dr. Adams' passion for teaching was inspired by his father, who was also an electrical engineering professor. This familial influence led him to explore teaching as a career after initially working as an engineer and tutor in his 20s. His journey eventually brought him to Western Carolina University after pursuing an advanced degree at The University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Outside of his professional life, Dr. Adams is actively involved in civic-minded organizations as a blood donor and through charitable donations to various causes and universities. He enjoys hiking and participating in trail work during his leisure time.
