Having built up a reputation as an inventor and leader in medical technology across a 35-year career, Dr. Chin currently serves as the chief innovation officer of FemDx Medsystems, TAS Medical, PercAssist and Orare Medsystems, all of which he also co-founded. In each of these medical device startups, he plays the role of the primary inventor of the technology being sold. Dr. Chin has been issued over 230 patents and has brought 14 products to market throughout his professional life. His creations have significantly impacted medical procedures, contributing to advancements that have saved lives. Other companies that Dr. Chin helped launch include Saphena Medical, InnoVein, nVision Medical, Pavilion Medical Innovations and Cruzar Medsystems.
In addition to the various companies he has founded, Dr. Chin previously held the position of chief innovation officer at Pavilion Medical Innovations and Maquet Cardiovascular (formerly Boston Scientific Cardiac Surgery). He spent almost two decades as vice president of research at Guidant Cardiac Surgery (formerly Origin Medsystems), where he made a name for himself with new designs to aid general surgery and cardiac surgery. Dr. Chin began his career in 1978 as a cardiovascular researcher working under Thomas J. Fogarty, M.D., a renowned surgeon and medical device inventor who helped inspire Dr. Chin's journey.
Dr. Chin's success in his field was born of his academic background. He received a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1975, followed by a Master of Science in mechanical engineering from Stanford University in 1976. Dr. Chin earned an MD from the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine in 1983 and completed two years of residency training in surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1985. He attributes his success to a commitment to continuous learning, as well as challenging himself to think about device design for at least 15 minutes every day until he taught his brain to begin generating those ideas naturally.
Beyond his day-to-day work, Dr. Chin associates with a number of academic and industry-related organizations. He served on the advisory boards for the Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University Biomedical Engineering Department, as well as being a board member for Vortex Medical Inc.
As a thought leader in the medical technology field, Dr. Chin has shared his expertise in over 100 presentations at universities and conferences across the United States and in other countries. He has written dozens of articles in such esteemed medical journals as Surgery, Surgical Forum, Circulation and more, in addition to authoring chapters of books on surgery and medical technology. Dr. Chin's contributions have been recognized with many awards, including the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine Dean's Award for Research in 1983, the Stanford University Emerging Entrepreneurs in Biomedical Technology Ideals of Entrepreneurship Award in 2007 and the Boston Patent Law Association's Invented Here! Top Award in 2018.
Outside of his career, Dr. Chin is a devoted husband and gives back to the greater community through various civic engagements. He has provided support as a board member for the Palo Alto YMCA and the Samaritan Counseling Center of Palo Alto. Looking ahead, Dr. Chin plans to continue designing medical devices for the foreseeable future, aiming to invent functional technology that effectively improves health care outcomes. He intends to conduct rigorous testing to those ends, ensuring that each of his new medical technology products will make an impact, and that his career will continue in the same direction.
