Mr. Smith is the Executive Director of the Lahaina Arts Society. He is also the Founder and Director of the Lahaina Arts Guild charity. The two corporations are mentoring and promoting Hawaiian artists and teaching thousands of children's art instructions and music lessons in Hawaii. Mr. Smith was a Prefect and high school Yearbook Editor at Cate School. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Occidental College in art, emphasizing in intaglio printmaking, etching and lithography. He received his law degree from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in California where he was a Law Review Staff Writer. He has been licensed to practice before the U.S. District Court in Southern California. In the 1974 Western State Law Review he co-published articles with his father, William French Smith, who was the Attorney General of the United Sates during the Reagan Administration. After a career practicing estate planning, tax and real estate law, he retired from the Greenbaum Law Group in Newport Beach, California in 2012.
Mr. Smith has been an active Real Estate Broker in California for more than 30 years, founding and managing both residential and commercial brokerage firms. He has been awarded numerous marketing and speaking awards and he remains an active Real Estate Broker in Hawaii with a Military Relocation Professional Certification from the National Association of Realtors.
Mr. Smith served in the United States Army National Guard in California where he was awarded the United States Army Achievement Award. He received his Private Pilot License at Bracket Field in California. He played doubles in the US Open Tennis Championships and was a Tennis Director with United States Tennis Association in Hawaii working with the Pacific Northwest Sections to build tennis camps on Maui, Hawaii and Kauai. He is a certified by the United States Tennis Association as a ten and under children's tennis coach. He was also a high school tennis coach at Maui Preparatory Academy.
An avid writer, Mr. Smith has written the novel TALK STORY BEACH, an adventure filled with Hawaiian history, legends and local lore centered in LahainaTown, which was destroyed in the Lahaina fire and is now being rebuilt. He has written and illustrated several children's books. TalkStoryBeach.com
Today, Mr. Smith's leadership is making a significant impact in the education and arts communities. As the Executive Director of the Lahaina Arts Society, and as a director of the Lahaina Arts Guild since 2018, he oversees an art society comprised of 70 juried artists, as well as a charity dedicated to teaching art and music to children. This has been especially challenging given the disastrous Lahaina fire and the pandemic. Mr. Smith's role involves handling communications, accounting, grant writing, managing an art gallery and art fairs and engaging in community work to help in the rebuild and healing on the island of Maui. Under his guidance, both organizations have experienced significant growth and had a major impact within the local community.
