Dr. Kasturi is an applied economist and an emeritus professor of economics at Radford University in Radford, Virginia, where he dedicated thirty-five years to educating students on various economics and business-related courses. His tenure on campus began as an assistant professor in 1985, quickly advancing to a full professor before taking on the role of chair of the economics department from 1995 to 2001 and again between 2011 and 2020. During his illustrious career, Dr. Kasturi also served as the director of the Center for Economic Education at Radford University for over a decade, where he played a pivotal role in promoting economic education across southwestern Virginia through innovative programs such as stock market games and workshops on the Great Recession and the global economy. Furthermore, he served as a faculty advisor to the Phi Beta Lambda business leadership organization at the university.
Before his extensive tenure at Radford University, Dr. Kasturi enriched his academic and professional journey with roles at several other notable institutions worldwide. He was both a researcher and a professor at the Manoa and Hilo campuses of the University of Hawaii, where he taught courses ranging from natural resource economics to business economics. During his time as a faculty member, Dr. Kasturi was notably one of three individuals from the University of Hawaii to be selected by Governor George Ariyoshi to join the research team for the tax review commission of the State of Hawaii. His work focused on nonprofit taxation, liquor taxation, and the improvisation of visitor and tourist taxation. Additionally, Dr. Kasturi completed a program in Project Evaluation and Monitoring at the Humanitarian Academy of Harvard University. He has been a research fellow or visiting researcher at the University of Oxford, the University of Western Australia, Indian Administrative Staff College, The East West Center, Jagiellonian University, Technical University of Krakow, Universidad Autonoma Chapingo and Leiden University. Beyond academia, his commitment to policymaking included appointments by governors to various commissions and task forces focused on economic development and taxation both in Hawaii and Virginia.
Apart from his primary career in education, Dr. Kasturi was instrumental as a member of the Southwest Virginia Economic Development Commission. As a member of the Tourism Task Force in Southwest Virginia, Dr. Kasturi was notably honored to receive a Certificate of Recognition for his leadership in the Southwest Virginia region from Governor Gerald Baliles. He also served on the Virginia International Trade Alliance (VITAL) set up by Governor Terry McAuliffe to help export Virginia goods worldwide. Dr. Kasturi has consulted with The World Bank on Iran, Egypt and Yemen and with TAL Consulting on issues related to Hawaii.
Dr. Kasturi's contributions to the field of economics are vast. He has authored over 40 scholarly publications and research reports and spoken publicly at over 70 global and regional professional conferences on renewable energy, water resources, global climate change, environmental economics, entrepreneurship and other topics. He has also contributed to several books and has served as a reviewer for various journal publications. Dr. Kasturi aims to continue contributing to academic discourse in the future by reviewing scholarly articles across a spectrum of topics.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Dr. Kasturi has significantly contributed to civic life and community service. He founded the Kasturi Scholarship at Radford University in 2003, which is now an endowed scholarship. He was also actively involved in faculty governance through his membership in the faculty senate's executive committee and as the chair of its resource allocation committee. Among other involvements, Dr. Kasturi's passion for running has led him to participate in numerous marathons across the U.S., raising funds for various children's organizations.
Dr. Kasturi's academic foundation is robust. He holds a Bachelor of Science in agriculture from Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University in Hyderabad, India, followed by a Master of Science in agricultural and resource economics and a Doctor of Philosophy in natural resources economics from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Dr. Kasturi's educational journey also included coursework at the University of Mumbai and a diploma in International Business from the Japan-America Institute of Management Science in Honolulu and Tokyo.
