Dr. Knieter's illustrious career in music education and as an interdisciplinarian in the arts spans decades, during which time he has held significant roles at prestigious institutions. His journey includes serving as a professor, executive assistant to the vice president of administration, and dean of the College of Arts, Media, and Communication at California State University, Northridge. Before this, he showcased his administrative and educational prowess at The University of Akron and the Northeast Ohio University College of Medicine. At Temple University's Boyer College of Music and Dance he was head of the doctoral program and chairman of the department of music education and music therapy. Dr. Knieter was acting dean at Duquesne University's Mary Pappert School of Music, and at San Jose State University he introduced their first course in ethnomusicology and conducted the orchestra. He became an interdisciplinarian in the arts at the West Hempstead Union Free School District, where he team-taught with an art teacher A Symposium in the Creative Arts while on loan to the history department where he taught The Fine Arts in Historical Perspective.
Over the years, Dr. Knieter has also enhanced his expertise as a management and arts consultant for Human Resources Unlimited, Inc., and a board of directors member for New York University's National Center for Research in Arts Education. The Pentagon assigned him as a teacher of advanced theory at the U.S. Army Element of the Naval School of Music where he taught and wrote the new curriculum for the Warrant Officer's Program and co-authored a music theory book. An expert in his field, Dr. Knieter holds a Bachelor of Science in music education and a Master of Arts in music education with a concentration in higher education from New York University, and an EdD in music education with concentrations in psychology and teacher education from Columbia University's Teachers College.
Throughout his career, Dr. Knieter has authored and edited several works, including "Tonal Harmony for Professional Musicians," "Cognition and Musical Development" and "The Teaching Process for the Arts and Aesthetics." He has also served on the editorial committee of the Journal of Research in Music Education and as an editorial consultant for the Journal of Aesthetic Education.
His broad professional interests are reflected in his participation in the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the American Association of Higher Education, the Society for Ethnomusicology, the American Association of University Professors, and several others. In conjunction with his work, he has contributed to his community through the Music Educators National Conference, where he chaired the Committee for the Advancement of Music Education and The Initial Teaching Alphabet Foundation.
