ALBUQUERQUE, NM, July 11, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Joseph G. R. Martinez, retired Regents' Professor from the University of New Mexico College of Education, was selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the New Mexico regional edition of Condé Nast Traveler.
During childhood, Dr. Martinez excelled at mathematics, particularly the area of algebra. Following a brief period of pursuing psychology as an area of interest in college, Dr. Martinez desired to pivot his professional focus to mathematics, leading his career with the knowledge that students often required more help in mathematics than most other educational areas. He joined the faculty of the University of New Mexico in 1974, where he served as a teaching assistant. After receiving his doctorate, Dr. Martinez relocated to the University of Albuquerque, excelling as an assistant professor and mathematics department chairman between 1982 and 1985.
Following this period, Dr. Martinez taught mathematics at the Valencia campus of the University of New Mexico for one year, then was promoted to assistant professor of educational foundations at the University of New Mexico College of Education between 1986 and 1988. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Martinez served as an associate professor in the same specialty from 1989 to 1992, an associate professor of psychological foundations from 1992 to 1993, and an associate professor of mathematics, science and education from 1993 to 1995. Impressively, Dr. Martinez escalated to the role of professor of mathematics, science and technology education in 1995, having then served as a professor of mathematics education from 1995 until his retirement in 2012.
In the latter stages of his career, Dr. Martinez developed graduate-level courses in research design, educational assessment and statistical analysis. Adjacent to his primary vocation, he has frequently collaborated with his wife, Nancy, on writing materials, having authored more than 250 publications, some of which were presented at national and international conferences. He co-authored the book "Math Without Fear: A Guide for Preventing Math Anxiety in Children," which detailed the relationship between cognition and emotion in mathematics learning.
As a testament to his resounding success in his industry, Dr. Martinez has been bestowed with more than 70 honors, accolades and recognitions. In 1998, he earned a Certificate of Recognition from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He also received Merit Awards from 1997 to 2009 and in 2011.
Dr. Martinez attended the University of New Mexico while pursuing his collegiate studies, first graduating with a bachelor's degree in psychology and a minor in English in 1973. He then received a Doctor of Philosophy from his alma mater in 1980, where he was nominated for the prominent Popejoy Dissertation Prize for his dissertation on research design and statistical analysis.
